11 Comfy Fall Boots You Don’t Have to Break In

My Dr. Martens and I have a complicated (er, maybe toxic) relationship. For those that don’t know, the footwear brand’s line of durable, long-lasting boots are notoriously difficult to break in due to the stiff, high-quality leather that’s used to make them. According to dedicated fans, if you’re strong enough to endure the initial blisters, you’ll end up with a gorgeous pair of leather boots that’ll last you a lifetime. Despite my attempts to tame them, though, my Dr. Martens still leave my heels sore and my calves rubbed raw. And each time I decide to wear them out, I’m quickly reminded that they have a long way to go before they’re even close to feeling comfortable.

While I love my Dr. Martens enough to try breaking them in again, I’ve decided to invest in comfier boots until that day comes. I’ve been digging around the web for other boots to try ahead of my fall travel plans, and, as it turns out, Amazon is stocked with comfy cowboy boots, Chelsea boots, combat boots, and even knee-high boots that five-star reviewers say require “zero break-in period” and are comfortable right out of the box (Hallelujah!). To save my soles — and yours — from a season’s worth of foot pain, I’ve handpicked 11 best-selling styles that consistently receive five-star ratings for how comfortable they are, straight from the jump. With boots starting at just $25, there’s a comfy fall boot on this list for everyone.

Chooka Women’s Plush Waterproof Chelsea Boot

Amazon

Hidden inside this classic rubber Chelsea rain boot is a fully lined, plush faux fur interior that keeps your feet warm on chilly days. These durable boots are completely covered in weather- and water-proof rubber and have memory foam-cushioned insoles that provide extra support. On sale for $30, these boots are incredibly versatile and look great with leggings, jeans, maxi skirts, and slim-fit trousers alike. One shopper shared that they took “zero time to break in” while on a trip to Ireland, while this five-star reviewer said that they bought them last minute for an Alaskan cruise, and despite not getting a chance to break them in beforehand, they felt like they were “walking on clouds” the entire time.

Dream Pairs Women’s Knee-high Riding Boots

Amazon

These knee-high faux-leather riding boots come in six different styles and look great with sweater dresses, mini skirts, skinny jeans, and oversized sweaters. We found several five-star reviewers — including this one, this one, and this one — that say these stylish boots required absolutely zero breaking in and were comfortable “right out of the box,” thanks in part to their roomy, round toe box, faux-fur interior lining, and adjustable buckle straps, which allow you to loosen or tighten the shaft to fit your calves.

Zizor Women’s Short Slipper Boots

Amazon

Why choose between slippers or boots when you can wear both at the same time? For $25, these ankle slipper boots combine the cozy comfort of fuzzy winter slippers with the grippy rubber outsoles of outdoor boots. Available in four colors, these boots have a soft suede upper with exposed stitch details and a fully lined faux-fur interior that keeps toes toasty and warm. These boots have earned five-star reviews from more than 2,000 Amazon shoppers for their quality, comfort, and, according to one reviewer, they are “very comfortable from day one” and require no break-in period whatsoever.

Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Mid-shaft Combat Boots

Amazon

We already love Dr. Scholl’s for its line of supportive walking shoes, but the brand has an impressive collection of comfy boots, too. Case in point? These edgy mid-calf combat boots. Originally priced at $130, these $87 boots have cushioned, arch-supporting, anti-odor insoles, inside zippers for easy removal, a chunky lug sole, and padded ankles that won’t dig into your heels. An over-40 five-star reviewer said the combination of comfort and style makes them great for fellow “elder goths,” and that “they felt so good with zero need for breaking in.”

Redtop Women’s Lug Sole Chelsea Boots

Amazon

These contemporary lug-sole Chelsea boots from Redtop have an elastic, sock-like shaft that surrounds your calves with soft, breathable fabric. Available in nine neutral colors, these boots have nonslip rubber platform outsoles and a chunky block heel that adds height without being difficult to walk in. One five-star reviewer reported that they “fit straight out of the box” and that they’ve worn them “almost every day for two months” because of how comfortable they are. The best part? They’re on sale for just $40.

Cliffs by White Mountain Women’s City Hiker Boot

Amazon

These lace-up boots have a vintage look without the uncomfortable break-in period old-school hiking boots often require. On sale for $52 and available in nine colors, these boots have a cozy knitted lining that completely surrounds the boot’s edge, preventing the shaft from digging into the back of your leg. They’re equipped with supportive cushioned insoles and a functional zipper that allows you to tug them off quickly without undoing the laces. This five-star reviewer shared that they usually need to break in boots, but these fit “so well” right out the gate.

Temofon Women’s Fur-Lined Ankle Boot

Amazon

We love the tactical, snowboarder-off-duty style of these $35 Temofon fur-lined winter boots. Featuring water-resistant uppers, a heavy-duty side zipper, and anti-skid rubber outsoles, these cozy boots have soft, fluffy interior linings that envelop your feet in warm, plush fur on frigid winter days. This five-star reviewer said that even though they have bunions, they “didn’t have to break them in,” and that they’re so comfortable, they feel more like bedroom slippers than outdoor boots.

Dr. Scholl’s Women’s Rate Ankle Boot

Amazon

These ankle boots, on sale for $60 and available in eight colors, have fashion-forward, low-top perforated suede uppers that have deep cutouts on the side that make it easy to pull them on or off. One shopper shared the boots were true to size and that they “didn’t have to break these in at all,” while this flight attendant said they were able to walk two miles in the airport without issue, and didn’t get any blisters despite not breaking them in beforehand.

Clarks Women’s Breeze Fur Booties

Amazon

These fur-lined booties from Clarks are cute, cozy, and, according to this happy shopper, do not require a break-in period. They come in four gorgeous neutral colorways and contain a removable, machine-washable cushioned foam footbed and a cozy sock interior lining. While they feel more like slippers than boots, they have a grippy, nonslip TPR rubber outsole that can withstand rain, snow, or sleet.

Columbia Women’s Newton Ridge Plus Hiking Boot

Amazon

Got a last-minute camping trip on the horizon? Skip the break-in period that other hiking boots require and instead opt for these best-selling Columbia Newton Ridge Plus boots, on sale for $48. They have lightweight impact-absorbing cushioned midsoles and fully lined padded interiors and toplines that prevent ankle blisters from forming. These hiking boots have earned more than 20,000 five-star reviews for how comfortable and lightweight they are, with some reviewers reporting that they didn’t have to be broken in before hitting the trails. This reviewer writes that these are the first hiking boots they’ve ever owned, and that they were able to wear them for “four days straight [for] a total of seven hikes” — all without breaking them in ahead of time.

Dream Pairs Women’s Embroidered Cowboy Boot

Amazon

The cowgirl trend is still going strong into autumn, but unfortunately, cowboy boots can be notoriously difficult to break in. This $34 embroidered set from Dream Pairs, however, has been heralded by Amazon shoppers for how comfortable they are — even upon first wear. Available in seven fun shades (we’re obsessed with the hot pink color), these cowboy boots have cushioned PU insoles, a foam padded lining, and pull loops on each side of the shaft for easy on and off. One five-star reviewer decided to give these a spin for a Western-themed party, noting they were comfy during an “entire night of dancing,” despite not breaking them in. Another impressed shopper shared that they seldom write reviews, but felt compelled to give these a five-star review after wearing them for eight straight hours, sans break-in period.
