If you are struggling with decor or layout for your bedroom, here are 15+ large primary bedroom ideas to get your creativity flowing.
Since our renovation, we are fortunate to have a very large primary bedroom. Our bedroom spans the entire attic of the house, which was finished in 2014 (with a fireplace in the middle of it!). When we renovated in 2023, we bumped the roof off the house (literally – it was open air) and created the bedroom of our dreams, with rows of windows where was once just a dark wall of roof. (See all the before and afters here!)
Before
After
I actually was on the verge of selling our dark dresser and bedside tables when our bedroom was also super dark (Side note, I bought them from World Market in like 2007 for $800 – a fraction of the cost of the Pottery Barn Farmhouse Collection look I was after!). An interior designer friend of mine told me not to sell them but to paint the walls instead. And since our whole house now has white walls, it’s so much brighter and the furniture looks great.

When it comes to bedroom design, I love a bright and airy look with all the new natural light. However, with so much space to play with, there is definitely room to add some more decor. The possibilities for design and personalization feel endless. It can also feel a bit overwhelming to tie all your ideas together into a cohesive and inviting look.
In this post, I’m sharing a round-up of inspiring large master bedroom decorating ideas to help you transform your space into a stylish and functional retreat.
15+ Large Primary Bedroom Ideas
Color Scheme
We went with a black and white color palette for the canvas of our whole house so we can add color as it feels seasonal and comfortable. Our whole house is painted in Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace. I’d much rather experiment with throw pillows and duvet covers then cans of paint! I am too indecisive and change my mind too much to commit to a color on the walls.
When I do use color, I tend to use modern coastal colors. Here are a bunch of inspo bedroom photos in that palette! I do love the look of a moody bedroom when I stay in one! Check out this blog post with 33 Moody Bedrooms.
Bed Ideas
Linens
On the coastal theme, I love our blue and white watercolor duvet and shams from Pottery Barn. Our duvet is no longer sold (I got it on sale) but this one from West Elm is similar.
We also have our darker bedding for a moody look, which I often put on in the winter (especially because it’s heavier).
Headboard
As the focal point of the room, the bed sets the tone! Whether you have a wooden four-post bed or a softer tufted headboard (I have had both!), the bed can impact the mood.
I love our Raleigh upholstered bed that I’ve had for over a decade (It almost didn’t survive a bad stain post renovation, but luckily it’s faded a lot now). If you’re on a tighter budget, you can do a metal bed frame with a headboard and bed skirt that will be less expensive than a full bed.
Sitting Area Ideas
Benches
A bench at the foot of the bed is pretty and practical! I’ve debated getting one for a while. This woven bench from Target is a great price for a coastal look. A storage bench is a great way to store extra duvet covers and sheets, which we currently store in the dresser across from our bed. I love this gold framed one for a very chic look! And this combo of fabric and metal is perfect for a modern farmhouse vibe.
Chaise Lounge or Oversized Arm Chairs
I think for reading, and if you have the space, a chaise lounge is perfect. We almost got one for under our windows, but I planted the wooden desk there, and we’re happy with having one arm chair in the corner. Admittedly, I don’t read in it often, but I do sit in it when the boys are wrestling after bath or I need a private breather from the noise. The matching one is in our living room.
I love this green velvet chaise but I’m not sure I’d put that in my own bedroom. This black one would match our theme well! I feel like a chaise or arm chair is a great place to be a little bold! This one doubles as a day bed.
Area Rugs
Even if you have wall-to-wall carpet, you can add an area rug! This is another way to oomph the decor and make a statement without taking a huge risk on walls. We have really cushy carpeting, so an area rug is not on my design list, but my sister has wooden floors in her bedroom, and their rug is SO cozy. It’s an investment, but I really think Serena and Lily makes some of the best rugs. And because it’s a bedroom and lower traffic for kids and food, you don’t have to worry as much about spills (Maybe pets though!).
Lighting Ideas
Nightstand Lamps
I LOVE looking at lamps. The small gold pair I have are from Target! I like that they have a lower profile and we have them plugged into Alexa plugs so we can turn them on and off with our voices and on a schedule.
A few other fun lamp ideas:
Pendant Lights
A pendant light can be a show stopper if your space calls for one. We have recessed lighting (that is dimmable, too) but in my other houses I’ve had a single overhead light. A flush mount like we have in our bathroom works with lower ceilings, and a chandelier in sea grass would be my pick if we had the room for one!
Wall Sconces
We considered putting in wall sconces when we did our electric plan. Ultimately, we wanted the flexibility of being able to move the bed (although now that we’re moved in I know that won’t happen!). If you have plugs beside your bed, you can do plug-in sconces like this seagrass one! West Elm has an array of modern and unique wall sconces, too.
Wall Decor Ideas
And lastly – the easiest way to decorate a primary bedroom is on the walls! Our walls have had a few more additions since the above move-in renovation photos were taken.
Here are a few ideas:
Gallery Wall
A gallery wall is a great way to showcase a lot of smaller photos, memories, and more. I like the look of cohesive frames and mixing in colors from the photos themselves. These are my favorite frames from Amazon. I have them in black and wood.
Large Statement Pieces
My favorite place to buy statement art is Lindsay Letters. We have two of her pieces in our house (birch trees in Birch’s room, and a botanical print in the living room). I would love to add one to our bedroom (across from the bed) but we are still having a “TV or no TV” debate and might end up with a Frame TV instead!
Window Treatments
Blinds and Shades
I am OBSESSED with our electric blinds. They open and close on schedule and I can control them from an app or a remote control. They were a total splurge but I have zero regrets! Our windows are much more blind friendly since they don’t go as far down and there are so many. I also love the look of natural wood blinds or shades made out of woven material for a coastal look. Natural materials can add warmth to a space.
Curtains
Floor to ceiling curtains have a very romantic look. Our hotel room at the Homestead had gorgeous curtains similar to these, and I’ve used them in past bedrooms. Curtains are also a lower risk way to use a really bold fabric (although you know I’d be going with the neutral look). I do think with curtains you get what you pay for, so this is an area I would go with something quality. I love the Belgian Flax curtains at Pottery Barn.
You can barely see our white electronic shades when they are up.
Closet Ideas
And don’t forget the closet!! Check out this post for a tour of my closet and all the details I included.
