17 Signs you’re eating too much sugar

We know it can be hard to avoid sugar completely, but consuming too much of it in your diet can actually be harmful to your health.

Not only can sugar rot your teeth but it can also cause constant fatigue, increased thirst, headaches and joint pain. The Healthy Mummy 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge has so many tips and recipes to help you cut out sugar. Read on to find out how we can help curb the cravings!

17 Signs you’re eating too much sugar

Here are just a few signs that you are consuming too much sugar in your daily diet.

  1. Tooth decay
  2. Hyperglycemia and fatigue
  3. Difficulty concentrating
  4. Anxiety and Depression
  5. Thirst
  6. Weight gain
  7. Headaches
  8. Aging dry skin
  9. Cravings
  10. Upset stomach
  11. Insomnia
  12. Increased hunger
  13. Joint pain and arthritis
  14. Increased urination
  15. High blood pressure
  16. Excess sweating
  17. Higher blood sugar

Tips to help reduce sugar intake

  1. Stop adding the little sugar crystals to your foods and drinks. If you need to sweeten your tea or coffee then use stevia or xylitol as they will not affect your blood sugars.
  2. Give up soft drinks but do not replace them with artificially sweetened versions. Instead choose sparkling mineral water and flavour with lemon or lime wedges.
  3. Choose wholegrain breakfast cereals that do not have added sugars. Make your own muesli, choose oats, quinoa flakes, or eggs rather than bowls full of colour and sugar!
  4. Instead of a pastry or cake for snack time, select something fresh and savoury like hummus with carrot sticks. If you must have something sweet, make your own healthier versions, freeze in small portions and take them with you.
  5. Use the low sugar recipes from the 28 Day Weight Loss Challenge to make healthier versions of processed and often sugar laden meals like breakfasts, lunch box snacks, afternoon tea and desserts.
  6. Read the labels on everything! Even yoghurt can have copious amounts of sugar added to it.
