One of the hallmarks of lo mein is its versatility. This makes lo mein an excellent choice for home cooking,as it can be easily adapted to suit what you have on hand or your specific tastes
Noodles:Typically,lo mein consists of soft wheat flour noodles that are boiled until tender and then tossed with a savory sauce, and vegetables. While the noodles are boiling prep all the vegetables, sauce, and protein.
Protein:protein such as chicken,beef,shrimp,or tofu.
Vegetables:The vegetables used can vary widely, but common choices include bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, snap peas, and bok choy. The proteins can also be customized according to personal preference or dietary restrictions.
Sauce:The sauce usually combines soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil, which gives the dish its distinctive umami flavor.
IngredientsNeeded:
- Egg noodles or spaghetti noodles, cooked
- Olive oil –Look for olive oils that are labeled as extra virgin,cold-pressed,and unfiltered for the highest quality.
- Garlic, minced–Chopped fresh garlic can take some time to chop so I often always use the freshly minced garlic that comes already made in a jar.
- Bell pepper,julienned’
- Onion,sliced
- Carrot,julienned
- Rreduced-sodium soy sauce,or more,to taste –Use a Low Sodium or if you don’t have that on hand go for Tamari or Coconut Amino Acids
- Brown sugar Is made by combining granulated white sugar with molasses, which gives it a brown color and a slightly different taste than regular white sugar.
- Sesame oil –is a popular cooking oil that is derived from sesame seeds. It has a distinct nutty flavor and is commonly used in Asian cuisine for stir-frying,sautéing,and as a flavor enhance
- Ground ginger–just like the prechopped minced garlic I like to get the grated ginger in the tubes that you can just squeeze out.
- Sriracha,or more,to taste –or hot sauce
- Fresh parsley,chopped (for garnish)

Recipe FAQS
The primary difference between Lo Mein and Chow Mein lies in the cooking method of the noodles. Lo Mein, which translates to “tossed noodles,”involves boiling the noodles until they are soft and then tossing them with a savory sauce and stir-fried vegetables and proteins. The noodles in Lo Mein are typically thick, chewy, and have a glossy texture due to the sauce coating them thoroughly.
Lo mein noodles,a staple in many Chinese dishes, can be part of a healthy diet if consumed mindfully. These noodles are typically made from wheat flour, water, and eggs, making them a source of carbohydrates and protein. However, their nutritional value largely depends on how they are prepared and the ingredients used in the dish.
Always store leftovers in clean,food-grade containers. The type of container doesn’t really matter. Use zip lock, glass, plastic, whatever! Make sure to store any leftovers in an airtight container.
