5 summer races to heat up your training calendar

With temperatures dropping well below zero across Canada this week, many runners have retreated indoors to the “dreadmill”—or questioning their sanity while braving the elements for a slow, chilly 10K training run. But as February and March inch closer, bringing the promise of warmer days, why not shift your focus to summer and sign up for a race in polar opposite conditions?

Here are five warm summer races to put on your training calendar.

Manitoba Marathon

One great option is the Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg. Nicknamed “Winterpeg” for its brutal winters, the city thaws into a warm (and humid) haven for runners in mid-June. The race, known for its flat and fast course, has seen temperatures climb into the mid-20s over the past two years and has played host to the Canadian Half Marathon Championships. It is a favourite for distance runners seeking fast time against some of Canada’s best distance runners. The event offers something for everyone, with distances ranging from a 5K to a full marathon, and is a perfect choice if you’re looking to skip the challenges of winter marathon training; not having to begin your build until late February, or early March.

If you’re looking for a summer race to bring the heat, the Under Armour Toronto 10K is a staple for fair-weather runners in Canada’s biggest city. The race takes participants on an out-and-back course along Toronto’s lakeshore on the second Saturday in June. Each year, the race attracts thousands of runners to the event, which offers scenic views of the skyline and Lake Ontario.

Kawartha Sun Run

If you’re looking for a picturesque escape out of the city, the Kawartha Sun Run in Ontario’s cottage country is a new race to pencil into your training schedule. This family-friendly race is one of Canada’s newest half marathons, located a few hours northeast of Toronto. Organized by the race directors behind popular events like the Georgina Marathon and the Nutrience Oakville 21.1 Half Marathon, the Kawartha Sun Run debuts on the second day of summer, June 22. It’s also a unique opportunity to experience a flat and fast course in the race’s first year.

Calgary Marathon

Another iconic spring-summer event is the Calgary Marathon, Canada’s longest-running marathon, scheduled for May 24 and 25. As Alberta’s premier race weekend, it offers six distances to accommodate runners of all ages and abilities. Last year’s event even included an on-course craft beer hydration station, adding a fun local addition to a historic race. Whether you’re taking on your first 5K or conquering the marathon, the Calgary Marathon weekend has a distance for everyone.

Ottawa Race Weekend

Every big city race weekend has its unique charm, but what sets Ottawa apart is its distinctive cultural experience through Canada’s capital city. For years, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend has been Canada’s biggest, hosting a 2K, 5K, and the national 10K championships on Saturday, followed by a half-marathon and marathon on Sunday. The fast and scenic courses go through renowned parks, the Rideau Canals and historic architecture, including the iconic Parliament buldings.  The event has been held on the final weekend of May for over a decade, a time locals celebrate as the unofficial start of summer in the nation’s capital.
