Running shorts that don’t bunch or chafe are like gold. It doesn’t matter if you need warm weather running shorts or you sport them year round, we care about fit, pockets and it doesn’t hurt when they look good. Listen up ladies we’ve got options you need!
For many runners, finding the right gear for our bodies (and the weather) can be challenging. The market is saturated with options, which can lead to us trying item after item in search of the right fit, fabric, and function but often without results.
To help take the guesswork out of the process and eliminate your trips to the post office for returns, 6 of the Run to the Finish coaches have shared some feedback on their favorite running shorts. Each has a slightly different body shape, size or needs for their shorts which we hope gives you options!
7 Best Women’s Running Shorts
I’ve been running for more than 22 years and like many of you, I’ve dealt with a lot of shorts creeping up and the dreadful chafing that can come with it.
Whether you’re looking for length, pockets ( a must-have for me), compression, or other features, we’re confident at least one pair of shorts on this list will hit the mark. All of these shorts have been used over MANY, MANY runs to ensure that they truly pass the test.
While many of the looser fit shorts have a liner, if you are curious about running underwear, we’ve covered that too!
Best Longer Short – Brooks Spark 8” Short Tight
A great option for a compression style short is the Brooks Spark 8” Short Tight. These mid-rise shorts are breathable but still provide the hold and compression many of us look for in tights, even short ones.
While they have fewer pockets than the Oiselle pocket jogger shorts, RTTF Coach Stacey said the three pockets these shorts do have are very functional.
She carries a phone in one pocket and sometimes even a skinny water bottle on the other side without feeling like the shorts are being pulled down. The rear pocket in the waistband is perfect for keys or nutrition.
The legs boast an inner-thigh panel to help minimize and prevent chafing and Stacey said she’s never had an issue with the shorts riding up, regardless of whether she’s heading out on a long run or running a race.
The shorts come in several colors and a good range of sizes. Stacey recommends potentially sizing up as a curvier runner to get the best waist to hip fit.
- Sizes: XS-2XL
- Inseams: 8”
- Price: $68
- Fabric: Polyester/spandex
- Rise: Mid
- Pockets: 3
Best Loose Fit Running Short – New Balance RC Short 3”
For runners looking for a loose-fitting short for warm weather runs, the New Balance RC Short may be a good option.
These shorts boast New Balance’s fast-drying technology in a polyester/spandex fabric to wick away moisture to keep you cool and dry. The shorts also have a built-in brief without seams for greater comfort.
The 3” inseam is on the shorter side for shorts on this list, but Coach Alison said these hang perfectly, have a nice roomy opening, and never bunch.
They also come in a 5” inseam for those who prefer a bit more length. Honestly, many of you find the shorter inseam bunches less and I think that may just be a difference in body shape! So don’t feel like you have to go shorter or longer based on us.
One drawback to the shorts might be the pockets. Alison said the pockets are nice but are only big enough for keys or small nutrition items. They would not fit a phone.
- Sizes: XS-XL
- Inseams: 3”, 5”
- Price: $65
- Fabric: Polyester/spandex
- Rise: Mid
- Pockets: 3
Best Speedy Run Shorts – Bandit Stamina 5” Women’s Compression Shorts
Another compression short option that stood out among the coaches was the Bandit Stamina 5” Compression Short. It even says on the website, “Run in for thousands of miles with zero reports of chafing.” If that doesn’t provide some reassurance, I’m not sure what would!
The shorts stretch in every direction so whether you’re running or hitting the gym, these shorts are designed to move with and support you. The fabric is double-layer, but remains breathable and offers just the right amount of compression.
One of the features Coach Lindsey liked most about these shorts was the grip tape around the leg openings that keep the shorts from riding up. She said regardless of whether she’s going all out in a speed workout or tackling a 15- mile long run, the shorts stay put.
The shorts also have three pockets, two of which are large enough for a phone. The back waistband pocket is zippered for added security and large enough for cards, cash, or keys.
- Sizes: XS-XL
- Inseams: 5”
- Price: $78
- Fabric: Stamina/lycra
- Rise: Mid
- Pockets: 3
Multiple Votes for Best Lightweight Women’s Running Shorts- Lululemon Speed Up High-Rise Lined Short
While we’re highlighting the high-rise version of these Lululemon shorts, one of the best features of these shorts is that not only do they come in two different inseams, they also come in low, mid and high rise.
These breathable lightweight shorts have vents to encourage airflow, a wide and comfortable waistband, and are lined with a quick-drying lycra fabric. The shorts also have smooth seams for comfort.
Coach Laura loves these shorts and reaches for them for just about every run, including ultras. She recommends sizing up as these do run a little on the small side. Coach Amanda seconds this stating she has pairs that have been in her rotation of running gear for over a decade!
The shorts have three pockets, including two that connect in the front and a more secure zippered back pocket. A phone will fit, but it’s definitely tight and might feel like the shorts are pulling, so these are more ideal if you’re wearing a hydration vest or not carrying a phone. The pockets are definitely ample-sized for keys and snacks.
A few added bonuses are these shorts come in a wide range of sizes and various colors.
- Sizes: 0-14
- Inseams: 2.5”, 4”
- Price: $68
- Fabric: Polyester/lycra
- Rise: High
- Pockets:3
Best For Bigger Thighs – REI Swiftland 5” Running Shorts
Last, but most certainly not least, are a pair of shorts highly recommended by Erin Ezra, aka @immrsspacecadet of “shorts gobbling” fame! Her running shorts reviews have helped so many runners find a good fit for their bodies.
She is all about the REI Swiftland 5” Running Shorts. If you haven’t checked out her review, don’t forget to read all the additional comments supporting her assessment. There was no shorts gobbling going on with these shorts!
These Swiftland shorts, which come in XS-3XL, boast a built-in, brief-style breathable liner for coverage. They also have a nice wide waistband with drawcord and flat seams to prevent chafing.
There are four pockets: one zippered lumbar pokcet, two drop-in waistband pockets great for gels or nutrition, and one hidden pocket perfect for a key. The zippered pocket may fit a phone, but it might be tight.
If you’re looking to jazz up your running gear, these shorts also come in some different colors you might not see much and some fun patterns.
- Sizes: XS-3XL
- Inseams: 5”
- Price: $60
- Fabric: Nylon/spandex (Liner: Polyester/spandex)
Thicker Fabric Winter Option – Oiselle Pocket Jogger
If you’re a fan of lots of pockets for all your storage needs, look no further than the Oiselle Pocket Jogger. Coach Amanda wore hers enough to get holes in them…after a good 7 years.
These shorts stood out for a few other reasons too, including the fact that they come in three different inseams. The longer length can be really great in preventing chafing!
There are two pockets, one on each leg, that are great for a phone, and there’s also a back zippered pocket and 2 side mesh pockets in the waistband. The wide waistband is flattering and not so tight that it creates the dreaded muffin top look.
The only downside might be the thicker fabric in the summer. It may be a bit too warm for those of you in hot or humid climates. The shorts literally got longer on me while running the 2021 Chicago Marathon in 75-degree weather.
- Sizes: 2-14, 16/18, 20/22, 24/26
- Inseams: 5.25”, 7”, 8.25”
- Price: $66
- Fabric: Nylon/spandex
- Rise: Mid
- Pockets: 5
Best Marathon Day Shorts – SOAR Marathon Shorts
Admittedly, I like the biker style fit running shorts these days. I find the pockets to be really snug for a phone and I’m just generally less worried about anything riding up.
BUT you truly can’t beat the Soar running shorts for stashing all those much needed gels and being so lightweight you’d wonder if you had shorts on if it weren’t for those gels! There are pockets and loops all around the band, which makes storage and grabbing them SUPER easy.
The back zippered pocket alone will hold 4 gels.
There are a few drawbacks here, particularly when it comes to price compared to the other options. There also are not as many size options and no inseam options. We found their gear to run a little small, so if you normally wear a small as a size 4-6, you might want a medium.
- Sizes: XS – XL
- Inseam: 2.5″
- Price: $180
- Rise: Mid
- Pockets: 1, plus loops
