Northwave Veloce Extreme: Innovation to the nth Degree

Each fragment of second counts, the strength, as much as the passion you put in each pedal stroke counts. Veloce has been developed with the Hour Record and Olympic champion Filippo Ganna, who has something to tell us about speed. In the wake of his latest success we’ve developed shoes meant to be Veloce, a concept that recalls not just pure speed but also many other elements that contributes to step into a great performance.

Northwave slw3

The double SLW3 developed by X-Dial is totally unique offering a dual zone and highly accurate closure with micrometric adjustment of the fit. A compact and light mechanism, its intuitiveness makes it smart because with a simple gesture the fit is customized.

Northwave Veloce reticular

The new, lighter Anatomic Reticular Support technology provides an extra support which swathes the foot to the finest fit. It ensures a correct position of the rider’s foot to maximized power transfer to the pedal in synergy with the sole PowerShape HT.

Northwave Veloce

Made from 100% unidirectional carbon, this sole has been developed to optimize the power transfer. The secret lies in the exclusive high tail structure, featuring an asymmetric design to provide adaptability to the external heel, while ensuring optimized support to the inner heel. The patented Powershape system for the arch works as an extra boost in support and comfort to the foot. The rubber heel pads are replaceable and greater vents maximize the air flow in and out.

Good enough for Filippo Ganna

Veloce is a project that was born and has been fully developed, from the first drafts all the way to the production line, in Italy with the support of the Olympic champion and the Hour Record holder Filippo Ganna. Made from 100% unidirectional carbon with a stiffness index of 15 the sole has been developed to optimize the power transfer to the pedals thanks to the exclusive high tail structure and the patented Powershape system.

  • The rubber heel pads are replaceable to make your shoes’ life longer.
  • Greater vents maximize the air flow in and out.
  • The upper features the underlap construction to enhance the wrapping fit with a uniform closure.
  • Laser cuts have been designed to optimize ventilation and thermoregulation of the feet.
  • The new and lighter Anatomic Reticular Support (ARS 2.0) technology provides extra support ensuring a correct position of the rider’s foot.
  • The heel grip with its oriented fibers prevents the foot from slipping out the shoe for a firm fit.
  • The double SLW3 developed by X-Dial is totally unique offering a dual zone and highly accurate closure with micrometric adjustment of the fit.
  • Two double density footbeds are provided to make the fit even more customized. 5 mm (slim fit) and a 3 mm (regular fit).
  • High tail adaptability to the external heel, and support to the inner heel.
  • Powershape: anatomical arch support.
  • Ventilation: greater vents maximize the air flow in and out.

Northwave Veloce Extreme

Alastair Hamilton PEZ sez: I’ve reviewed about six different pairs of cycling shoes over the last couple of years, all of them were very good. The best carbon soles and comfortable uppers with closure systems that all did what was needed. But they were all different and all had something that the others didn’t have. Shoes are a bit like saddles, in the way that they are very personal – what suits me might not suit you.

Northwave Veloce Extreme

I’m not going to say “these are the best cycling shoes I’ve ever worn.” There is a good chance that they are, as they do have everything I look for in a bike shoe. As I have said before, I need a good arch support, especially on the left foot, if I don’t, then my foot twists inwards towards the crank and causes knee problems. Since mentioning the problem in previous reviews, quite a few readers have contacted me with the same problem, so it’s not just me. The other shoes I’ve had success with have had straps from the sole coming round the arch for support and two had straps from under the sole going all round the foot. With the Northwave Veloce Extreme, there are no arch straps, but the shoe is so solid that it gives support all round the foot and there is an extra (black) section sewn into the side for even more supports.

Northwave Veloce Extreme

The toe area is roomy, you can wiggle your toes without constriction, plus the front of the shoe has been strengthened for protection. Talking of strength, the sole is super stiff. The carbon comes up the arch to meet the extra support coming down from the top and comes up the back of the heel, making up part of the heel cup, all the things I need. The sole has rubber protection at the toe and a replaceable rubber heel pad, so the little walking you do shouldn’t damage the carbon and maybe give some grip, although stay away from the Koppenberg. The ventilation seems ample, with two meshed scoops at the toe and two long meshed slits running the length of the middle of the sole. They come with the usual three point hole fitting and there seems to be more than enough choice of plate placement. I tried them with both Look and Wahoo/Speedplay pedals without any problem.

The solid upper is shaped from one piece of material and stitched up the back. The SLW3 dials work very well, micro adjust with a release knob on the top which is also micro adjust or will release the cord completely so you can take the shoes off. PEZ man Chuck Peña made a short video on his Northwave Extreme GT12, a few hears ago:

How the X-Dial SLW3’s work

The dials and the fastening are double stitched for security and spare parts are available. There is a lot of padding inside the heel and round the top of shoe, this ensures comfort and hold tour foot in place. Also the material on the inside at the back of the foot feels ‘directional’ in that it is smooth going in, but rough and hold the foot from pulling out. I would describe the ventilation in the uppers as minimal, so far the hottest day I’ve been out wearing them it was 25ºC (77ºF), my feet didn’t feel hot, wait for the 40ºC in the summer.

Northwave veloce Extreme

The Northwave Veloce Extreme comes in a nice shoe bag and, impressively, with two insoles. They are ‘Regular’ fit and ‘Slim’ fit. They are 3 and 5 mm thick and I would say they would make the difference of nearly a half shoe size. The regular was fine for me, I tried the slim and my foot felt too constricted, but if you are between sizes, then this could be an answer.

Northwave Veloce Extreme

My overall impression: The Northwave Veloce Extreme are a top class pair of shoes. Everything has been thought of for the rider’s comfort, security and putting the ‘power down’ without any loss. I like them for the reason that they solve my foot problem, but Northwave has that Italian style (also available in black), so that has to be a good. If Filippo Ganna likes them, then that’s good enough for me. They are very well made, robust and comfortable.

Northwave Veloce Extreme

Northwave veloce Extreme

Any drawbacks? I’ve not found any. Maybe the lack of ventilation in the uppers could be a problem, but until I’ve had a summer of riding, I don’t know.

PS. The Northwave Extreme Air Socks were nice too.

Campagnolo HPPM – High Precision Power Measurement
The distinctive technological quality of Campagnolo is now also embedded in the new Power Meter: precise and reliable power measurement thanks to 16 sensors and 1 gyroscope.

Campagnolo 2024

High precision and attention to detail are fundamental characteristics in contemporary cycling as well as for the early 2024 Campagnolo proposal. After meticulous and in-depth studies, the Italian company presents its own power meter dedicated to road bikes: HPPM, that stands for “High Precision Power Measurement”. A solution that expands the Campagnolo product range and which pursuits the goal of providing the most precise data possible to support the most demanding performances.

Campagnolo 2024

The Campagnolo HPPM power meter falls into the family of ‘spider-based’ power meters, i.e. with 16 sensors positioned in the spokes of the crankset to detect torque values, expressed in Newton meters, with great precision. The Power data is obtained from a real-time crossing of torque value with the angular velocity provided by the integrated gyroscope. The 16 strain gauges produce multiple readings, which, combined by a specific algorithm, guarantee an extreme accuracy of +/- 1%, also thanks to high frequency data sampling. The angular velocity and torque signals are in fact measured every five milliseconds. A very high frequency equal to 200 hertz, which gives the clearest possible reading of the data.

Campagnolo 2024

Equipped with an Ultra-Torque titanium axle and unidirectional carbon fiber cranks (available in 170, 172.5 and 175 millimeters), the crankset with HPPM Power Meter offers immediate reactivity to release all the power exerted by the athlete on the transmission. 3 chainring options are available: 45-29, 48-32, 50-34.

Campagnolo 2024

The new My Campy 3.0 app allows the system calibration in just a few steps and shows the battery charge status with a modern and intuitive interface: a single charge lasts for over a month and charging time is just under four hours.

Campagnolo 2024

With the new HPPM Power Meter the Campagnolo ecosystem expands, maintaining the same magnetic charging connector as the other components of the Super Record Wireless groupset.

Campagnolo 2024

  • Campagnolo crankset with HPPM meter has a retail price of €2,240 and $2,449.
