3 tips for making hill workouts fun

Hill training can become a grind, particularly when you find yourself repeatedly tackling the same daunting incline. Let’s face it, hills are a polarizing aspect of running–you either love them or dread them. But hill workouts can significantly enhance your performance, no matter what distances you are training for. It’s no secret that hill training can bolster your speed even on flat surfaces, making it a crucial component of any training regimen.

This article is for runners who are tired of hill workouts and looking for a way to reignite their spark. Here are three strategies to add enjoyment back into your hill training routine.

Shorten your reps

Contrary to popular belief, just because you’re doing hill training doesn’t mean you have to reach the top of the hill on every rep. Whether you stop midway or reach the summit, the benefits are the same. Any hill workout enhances muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and running form, which can be achievable even through brief 20- to 30-second hill pickups.

Use various hills

If you’re fortunate enough to train in an area with diverse topography, use it to your advantage. Instead of confining yourself to a single hill,  explore other inclines in your area to get your body used to different gradients. This not only prevents monotony, but will also boost your resilience and mental toughness.

Repeating the same ascent can feel like running in circles. Break free from this rut by incorporating two to four inclines into your workout routine, and if the hills are close enough, consider alternating repetitions.

Curate a hill workout playlist

Unlike the rhythmic consistency of a track workout, finding a cadence and mastering hills can be a little tougher. Combat this challenge by curating a dedicated hill playlist featuring your favourite workout tunes. Music can lift your spirits and propel you through challenging moments, like hill climbs. Let the rhythm and lyrics carry you through the toughest stretches of your session, transforming what once felt difficult into a motivational endeavour.
