The cobbled Classics may be over but spring Classics season continues as the peloton heads for the Limburg and Walloon hills. Amstel Gold Race and Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition are up next on Sunday, April 14.
The race, named after the beer which sponsors it, may not be a Monument but it’s still the biggest race in the Dutch cycling season, with plenty of hills on the route to challenge those taking it on.
2023 women’s race winner Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) will be back to defend her title, while 2022 winner and World Champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will headline the men’s race.
Aside from those two superstars, there will be a host of other big names tackling the hills of Limburg at the weekend.
In the women’s peloton, look out for more SD Worx-Protime racers in Lorena Wiebes and Lotte Kopecky as well as Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (AG Insurance-Soudal), Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-SUEZ), Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek), Pfeiffer Georgi (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), and Marianne Vos (Visma-Lease a Bike).
Van der Poel, meanwhile, will be supported by Jasper Philipsen in the battle against Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike), Benoît Cosnefroy (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) and Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla).
