Weight Watchers Chocolate Mug Cake (Air Fryer or Microwave)

Have you ever made a cake recipe for more than 12 servings and later on regretted that because it made too much? I admit that I do that all the time and can barely eat the whole entire thing. Enter mug cakes. A cake specifically made for 1 person only and I’m in love. From now on, my goal will be to make sweet treats for only 1 or 2 servings.

Why You Will Like this Recipe

It’s kind of messy once you add the chocolate syrup and whipped topping on it but it’s so dang good! I can’t stop eating these!

While researching ideas for low point mug cakes, I saw many misleading recipes that stated they were zero points but had self-rising flour in them.  Maybe close to zero, but not zero. My chocolate mug cake recipe is only 6 points for 1 serving, with no other temptations left behind.

This cake is moist, and best served warm right out of the microwave or air fryer! I garnished my chocolate cake with a little Whipped Topping, a drizzle of more chocolate syrup, and strawberries.

Ingredients needed for Mug Cake

  • Self-rising flour – is a type of flour that already contains baking powder and salt, which are essential ingredients in many baked goods.
  • Cocoa powder – Is a product of cocoa beans that have been roasted, fermented, and processed to remove the fat, leaving behind a dry and bitter powder. I like Hershey’s Cocoa Powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Sugar – Or  regular granulated sugar, I do not use sugar substitutes in any of my recipes but if you know the conversions feel free to do so
  • Lite Hershey’s Syrup – This has lower calories and less sugar than regular Hershey’s syrup
  • Egg white or egg
  • Extra Toppings: Sliced Strawberries, Whipped Topping like Cool Whip, Lite Chocolate Syrup
  • See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

What other dish can I use instead of a mug?

I used a ramekin to make my mug cake in. I know, it’s called a mug cake, but any microwave-safe dish will do. Just make sure it says that on the bottom of the dish.

How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake

Step 1: In a small bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa, and a tiny pinch of salt until well combined. (This can also be mixed directly into a large mug). Add egg white and syrup and mix into the dry mixture.

Step 2: Grease a tall, large mug or any microwave-safe dish, and pour in this mixture, scraping out with a spatula.

Recipe Tip: You can mix all the ingredients together in the dish that you plan on using to bake it in.

Step 3: Place in the microwave on High for 1 to 2 min. Or set the dish in the air fryer basket. Air fry at 350 for 10 to 12 minutes.

Check the cake to see if it is done after 1 minute. If not, continue cooking for 1 minute longer.

Can I make a mug cake in the air fryer?

Yes you can make a mug cake in the air fryer. Set the temperature to 350 and place the ramekin with the mug cake mix in it already. Air Fry for 10 to 12 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean.

What can you add to a mug cake?

Mug cakes are a quick and easy treat, perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth. While the basic recipe only requires a few ingredients, there are plenty of ways to customize your mug cake to suit your taste buds. Here are some ideas for what you can add to a mug cake:

  1. Adding a handful of chocolate chips to your mug cake batter will give it a rich, chocolatey flavor and a gooey texture.
  2. Fresh or frozen fruit like berries, sliced bananas, or diced apples can add a burst of flavor and moisture to your mug cake.
  3. Nut butter: Swirling a spoonful of peanut butter, almond butter, or Nutella into your mug cake batter will give it a nutty richness and a creamy texture.
  4. Adding a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to your mug cake batter can add warmth and depth of flavor.
  5. Adding a drop or two of vanilla or almond extract to your mug cake batter can enhance its flavor and aroma.
  6. Pumpkin puree or unsweetened applesauce are good substitutes for oils.
