Have you ever thought of making your own nut flours? Learn how to make Almond Flour for your next cake and pastry recipes. This homemade almond flour offers a healthier alternative for gluten-free and grain-free baking using only your blender or a food processor. You will never have to spend so much money on store-bought almond flour. Instead, make an almond flour recipe with us in just a few minutes.Â
The minute I started making my nut flours, my low-carb baking changed course. Not only is it cheaper, but you also get the freshest flour to use exactly on the day of cooking.Â
I have been using almond flour almost exclusively since our lifestyle and all my recipes are low-carb. I always prefer almond flour over other nut flour because it has the best consistency with practically no flavor, and you can replace it with any original recipe. I have even written a complete comparison of almond flour vs coconut flour for your brief idea if you are interested. It is best used for baked goods like my almond flour bread, soft teddy bear cookies and almond flour cupcakes, and it has become my go-to flour substitute.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Gluten-Free – this recipe for almond flour is naturally gluten free, and it is also suitable for those with gluten sensitivities. It is the perfect low-carb substitute for flour with high carbs.
- Delicious flavor – almond flour does not taste as plain as it looks. It adds a subtly sweet, nutty flavor to recipes and can enhance the taste of your baked goods and other dishes.
- Nutritious Substitute – If you do not know, almond flour is rich in nutrients like protein, healthy fats, and fiber. It is a nutritious alternative to traditional wheat flour and is quick and easy to make.
My Favorite Almond Flour Recipes
Using almond flour in my baked recipes and desserts has been my habit since it is my favorite among all the flour substitutes in my kitchen.
I made a few cupcake recipes with almond flour since the nutty flavor fits perfectly. I have made simple keto cupcakes, moist chocolate cupcakes for my kids, and these Santa hat cupcakes and Christmas tree cupcakes for Christmas and the Holidays.
My favorite breakfast recipes are sweet ones. Our pancakes, thin crepes, breakfast waffles, and granola oats are my go-to breakfasts, and they are all low-carb and free of gluten and sugar.
What Is Almond Flour?
Almond flour is a type of flour made from blanched or activated whole almonds soaked in water and then dehydrated. People use it as a gluten-free substitute for traditional wheat flour, just like I do in most of my cakes and breads.
Regarding its taste, it is slightly sweet with a nutty flavor and a super soft texture when you touch it.Â
Is Almond Flour Gluten-Free?
It is entirely gluten-free flour, like coconut flour, since it is made from finely ground almonds. It is one of the famous nut flours you can buy in the stores and make it at home in just a few minutes. Almond flour is also tastier than regular flour, so it is better to use it not only because it is healthier but also because it adds flavor.
Ways To Use Almond Flour
In my years of using almond flour in my homemade recipes, I have mastered ways you can use your almond flour not only in baking:
- Baking – use it for recipes like cakes, such as coffee berry cake or chocolate chaffle cake. It is also suitable for making simple shortbread cookies and almond butter cookies.
- Thickening – almond flour can be used as a thickening agent in soups, sauces, and gravies. Whisk it into the liquid until smooth, and then heat until thickened.
- Binding – can also be used as a binding agent in recipes like pumpkin meatballs, mini burgers, and meatloaf. It can help hold the ingredients together and add moisture to the finished dish.
- Breading – use it as breadcrumbs to coat chicken, fish, or vegetables before baking or frying. It creates a crispy, flavorful coating for almond-crusted chicken or fish.
How To Make Almond Flour Recipe
This recipe only uses one ingredient: almonds. Making almond flour at home is much easier than buying it at the store. Let me walk you through the entire process.
Kitchen Gadgets Needed:
- Magic Bullet Blender:Â Use it to grind the almonds until they turn into finely ground flour.
Ingredients Needed:
- Almonds: Look for fresh almonds for this recipe; it is on you if you want slivered blanched almonds or peeled activated almonds.
*Exact measurements are listed in the recipe card below.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING GLUTEN-FREE ALMOND FLOUR
First Step: Prepare Almonds
Prepare your almonds. I am using dehydrated activated almonds for this recipe since I have made a batch specifically for making almond flour. Make sure to peel and dehydrate them entirely so there will be no moisture and clumping once blended and ground.
Second Step: Grind
Place 1 cup of peeled and dried almonds into the Magic Bullet blender and grind until they look like fine powder-like white flour. Pulse for 10 seconds or more, then open the blender to check if they are ready.
If you still want to blend the almonds for a finer result, stir to check for some almond bits and grind again for a few seconds more. Be careful of the time because it starts turning your flour into almond butter.
Third Step: Store and Enjoy
Once the almond flour is completely ground, you can store it or use it immediately.
TIPS AND TRICKS TO MAKE FLOUR USING ALMONDS:
- Almonds – you are free to use either blanched or activated almonds. Make sure they are dried before blending them. Use our recipe for activated almonds if you plan to use the same.
- Substitute – Nuts can be transformed into nut flour following this recipe as a substitute for all-purpose flour.
- Drying – Drying the almonds before processing them in the blender will help achieve a better texture to the almond flour as drying them prevents clumping.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Can I Use Almond Meal Instead Of Almond Flour?
Yes, you can use almond meal instead of almond flour, especially when you do not care about the color of your dish. They are alike, but almond flour is usually smoother than almond meal. The main difference is the almonds used since almond flour comes from almonds without skins, while almond meal includes almonds with skins.
Even though they differ, you can still substitute almond meal for almond flour in most recipes. The texture might change a bit, so consider this when you do so.
Is Almond Flour A Good Substitute For Wheat Flour?
Yes, almond flour can be a good substitute for wheat flour, and I have been swapping it with some recipes for you here in my blog. It is famous for people who want to avoid gluten because almond flour is naturally gluten-free.
What I also like about this flour is its unique nutty flavor, which can make the taste of my homemade baked goods even better.
Can I Make Muffins and Apple Crumble Using Pure Almond Flour?
Using pure almond flour in muffins is excellent because the flour’s nutty flavor perfectly complements the recipe and adds a moist texture. Almond flour can also be used in the topping mixture for apple crumble to create a crispy and gluten-free crust.
It is important to remember that almond flour does not have gluten to hold ingredients together and give them shape. You might have to make a few adjustments or add other binding agents.
After making your almond flour, you can immediately transfer it into an airtight container, which helps prevent moisture and air from accumulating. You can also consider refrigerating or freezing it since almond flour has oils that can go bad if it gets too warm. Keeping it cold helps it stay fresh for longer.
