Beer Brats Bobby Flay

These Beer Brats take less than 20 minutes to make. The brats cook in some beer, onions, and butter, and then they get finished off on the grill. Grilled Brats are a classic Summertime treat in the Midwest!

Why You Will Love This Recipe

This is by far my favorite Summer meal to have here in the Midwest. It’s quick and I just love the cooked onions in beer on top of my brats. One of the foods we Midwesterners like to enjoy during the Summer is bratwurst.

This meal is ready in under 20 minutes and the brats reheat in the microwave well for the next day. These can be cooked on a grill or griddle outdoors!

What are Beer Brats?

Bratwursts are a type of German sausage and these sausages are cooked on the grill and usually submerged in some beer and onions. You can use a skillet made for cooking on a grill like a cast iron or just one of those grill pans you can get at any grocery store or hardware store to cook the brats in.

Ingredients for Beer Brats

Ingredients Needed for Beer Brats.

This Beer Brat recipe only requires 4 easy ingredients!

  • Bratwurst – Johnsonville is a common brand here where I live. Get whatever Brats are your favorite or go to a local butcher shop and get some brats there.
  • Medium Onion – Use either yellow or white onions. I like the yellow onions cause they are more on the sweeter side when they get cooked on the grill.
  • Butter – Always use unsalted butter to control the salt
  • 12 oz bottle of beer (any kind) – Whatever beer is in your fridge at the moment, no need to go out and get a fancy beer for this easy recipe.
  • See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

How to Make Beer Brats

Step 1: Place brats in a Dutch oven with onions and butter, cover the brats with beer. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer until the brats are cooked. (About 10 minutes)

Note: I like to continue cooking the onions in the beer until they are soft and tender. Almost like caramelized onions.

Step 2: Remove the brats and set aside the beer mixture.

Step 3: Grill brats or place on a Blackstone Griddle until golden brown and return to beer mixture until ready to serve. Serve brats on fresh baked brat buns with sauerkraut, onions, green peppers, ketchup, and/or mustard.

How to make Beer Brats Weight Watcher friendly?

Find a chicken sausage or turkey sausage link that is low in points and a lite beer such as Miller Lite. Wal-Mart has a brand called Sam’s Choice Chicken Apple Sausage for 2  points. Johnsonville also has a chicken apple sausage brat for 4 smart points.

Then just follow the recipe down below with the replaced ingredients.  A regular brat is 9 smart points and if you eat right during the day with a couple of low point meals you can enjoy a regular beer brat.

Toppings for Beer Brats:

I really like caramelized onions, but you can add sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc. Make some Pickled Red Onions on the side.

What to serve with Beer Brats?

I love to serve beer brats with classic Summer food like Carmelized Onion Dip with Wavy Lays potato chips.
