Chuck Peña PEZ sez: PEZ readers may remember my take on Osmo Nutrition Active Hydration, Power Fuel, and Rapid Recovery last March. Some of my comments:
- Osmo Active Hydration – Taste-wise, the lemon lime was … well … lemon lime. For me, just the right amount of sweetness and flavor. And no issues with my stomach.
- Osmo Power Fuel– Since Power Fuel has a neutral flavor it can be mixed with Osmo Active Hydration (I mix the Active Hydration first and then add Power Fuel rather than throwing it all in at once). The result is a water bottle not just for hydration but also full of calories … 230 to be exact. That’s about the equivalent of a couple of typical gels. Multiply that by two water bottles and you have a lot of liquid fuel!
- Osmo Rapid Recovery – I know a lot of us don’t think about replacing protein after a ride, but it’s important (especially after longer, harder rides) to help prevent lean body mass/muscle loss. Osmo Rapid Recovery is just the ticket for that. For me, it’s also great pre-ride with a light breakfast to fuel up the tank.
But just because Osmo tastes good to me doesn’t necessarily mean it will for you. Everyone is different so there’s a question of how it will taste and how it will sit in your stomach (particularly during a ride). The Osmo Endurance Sample Pack is a cost-effective way to try their products without having to make a large investment buying multiple products (usually in larger quantities). If it turns out you don’t like the flavor or if it doesn’t agree with your digestive system, you haven’t spent a lot of $$$$ on product you’ll most likely end up throwing away.
One new to me product in the Sample Pack is their PreLoad Hydration. According to Osmo:
Osmo PreLoad is a high sodium hyper-hydration formula intended for pre-workout to prepare the body for long, intense efforts and hot environments by raising plasma levels and boosting blood circulation. Preload is for those days when you are losing more body water than you can replace with regular hydration. It comes in one salty flavor, Pineapple Margarita.
Honestly, they had me at “Pineapple Margarita.” 🍍 In part because “pineapple” was one of my nicknames in high school. The flavor itself is more muted/subtle. It’s neither strongly pineapple nor margarita. For me, not as flavorful as your typical sports drinks that you can buy at your local grocery store, convenience store, or gas station. That’s not a knock; just my observation. And, of course, everyone’s taste buds are different so YMMV. Again, why the Sample Pack makes a lot of sense to me — you can spend not a lot of $$$ to try it out and see if you like it before buying larger quantities.

Just as I know a lot of us don’t think about replacing protein after a ride, I think the same is probably true for hydration before a ride. With temperatures getting hotter (we’ve already had one — admittedly unusual — 90+ F day here in Babylon on the Potomac), it’s important to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Especially when the dog days of summer with sweltering heat and humidity are upon us, we probably don’t hydrate enough.
