Sometimes the best travel tips are the simplest and for model and former Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo, she keeps it to just that.
“I don’t wear any makeup when traveling,” she told Travel + Leisure over Zoom. “That’s one rule because I do feel like you will have a higher chance of breaking out if you are wearing a full face of makeup.”
Although, it’s not that she takes a flight empty-handed, but a caked-on face is not one of her accessories, the 31-year-old told us.
“A few things I always have with me is some sort of a spray. I love Dr. Barbara Sturm or Caudalie or La Mer. I also absolutely love traveling with a makeup wipe, the Neutrogena wipes are great. Something to just take off the sweat you build up.”
She also always carries an eyebrow brush and a face mask, but one skincare trend she hasn’t tried in-flight just? An infrared mask.
“I haven’t gotten there yet because I feel like it would be disturbing for people next to you,” she said.

Aisle or Window seat?
“I love the window seat. I know this is kind of controversial.”
What’s your go-to travel outfit?
“Some sort of comfortable slack, and a sneaker or slide. I love slides because they’re easy to [take] on and off if you’re sleeping or getting up to go to the bathroom. I love to travel with a sweater or jacket, of course.”
Item you can’t travel without:
“I always travel with a sleep mask. The light always bothers my eyes. If you’re not traveling with a sleep mask, just try.”
Do you have a favorite snack for the plane?
“I love the Kind bars. I love any sort of nuts, to be honest with you. They are a go-to snack for me. I would say Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% and some almonds would be perfect! Also, electrolytes to stay hydrated or some sort of collagen beauty powder or something.”
Any tips for jet lag?
“My motto is just sleep as much as you can. I know a lot of people believe in staying up late so that they can adjust their time but I think if you’re tired and you have time to sleep, sleep. You could get overtired and may not be able to fall asleep later. That’s my biggest thing is that you need rest to function.”
As for what she packs in her luggage, Culpo believes in planning all your outfits and documenting them — similar to a practice we’ve seen go viral on Instagram.
“Take pictures of them, that’s the best way to not overpack,” she told T+L, adding, “I’m not a roller. I like to do the folding.”
Culpo used her strategy for her recent trip to the Miami Grand Prix this past weekend when she partnered with Peroni to celebrate the launch of their new non-alcoholic beer Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% to celebrate their partnership with Scuderia Ferrari.
And whether she’s traveling for work or fun, she tries to stick to a workout routine if possible, and prefers running on a hotel gym treadmill or outside, she told us.
“It’s really important after being up in the air for so long after traveling,” Culpo noted. “[Flying is] not great for circulation, so anything to just get your heart rate going will make you feel really good.”
But regardless of a workout she’ll make sure to indulge in delicious food, within reason.
“I am a firm believer in not restraining yourself because traveling is an experience and it is special,” she said. “So I think you should try what you want to try, but just don’t overdo it.”
