Air Fryer French Fries
Erik and I’ve been dabbling in using an air fryer for cooking on and off for a few years now. But the one thing we’ve been crazy about? Air Fryer French Fries!
We love the simplicity and ease of the ingredients for making air fryer fries: just potatoes, oil, and salt. With just a bit of scrubbing, chopping, and tossing, we’re on our way to delicious homemade French fries in our beloved air fryer!
The best part? These air fryer French fries are practically guilt-free. We’ll be using way less oil than with conventional French fries, and we won’t have to deal with hidden calories or mysterious ingredients!
Ingredients for Homemade French Fries in Air Fryer
- Potatoes: I like using russet potatoes for that crispy skin, but some folks prefer Yukon potatoes for their delicious golden texture.
- Oil: extra virgin olive oil has a high smoke point and is less processed.
- Salt: we’re using fine table salt here, but you can use freshly ground for coarser and less uniform (and sometimes deliciously large) bits of salt.
How to Make Air Fryer French Fries
Prepare the potatoes: Wash and scrub potatoes. Then, slice into ¼-inch thick strips.
Now, add potato strips to a mixing bowl. You’ll drizzle the potatoes with enough oil to evenly coat then.
Then, sprinkle potatoes with salt and toss to coat.
Air Fry in batches: To make the best air fryer French fries, we’ll be working in batches.
Create a single layer with room in between each French fry for even cooking and crisping.
Cook for about 5 minutes, then flip and cook again until crispy.
Set air fryer French fries on a plate until all potatoes are cooked.
Once cooked, toss all the fries into the air fryer basket to re-crisp, about 2 minutes.
Add any additional seasoning and serve the best homemade French fries in an air fryer!
What to serve with Air Fryer Fries
Tips
- Season last: add any seasoning salt or garlic salt after air frying. Sometimes adding in herby spices can lead to burning in the air fryer and a harder clean up time.
- Don’t air fry it all at once: you’ll want to work in batches, limiting each batch to a single, spaced-out layer of potatoes. That way, the air fryer fries will be crispier and cook more evenly.
- Cut potatoes evenly: I like to keep my ruler-etched bench scraper nearby while cutting the potatoes to keep an eye on the size. You can also use an easy tool like this safe mandoline French fry cutter.
