Discovering the Cheapest Places to Fly to in Europe
Though the cities above are almost always the cheapest destinations to get to in Europe, you will discover other great deals occasionally. I’ve found incredibly cheap fares to secondary and tertiary destinations in Europe, and I attribute this to the following tips:
- Book early. Aim to book your flights at least 3 months in advance. Last-minute deals are rare, and prices usually go up as the flight date gets closer. Early birds get the best deals!
- Compare multiple search engines. I start with Skyscanner, then cross-check with Hopper and Google Flights. Sometimes, the best deal pops up on one of these other sites.
- Sign up for airline newsletters. Get on the mailing list for sites like Scott’s Cheap Flights (Going). They’ll send you alerts on discounted fares. Check out my article on top travel flight hacks for more.
- Be flexible with your dates. Give yourself some wiggle room on the dates, and you’ll be able to unlock the cheapest fares. Avoid major holidays like Christmas, and choose midweek over weekends. I’ve found that the spring and fall are amazing for flying to Europe, where you can luck out on the weather and save a bundle in the process.
- Fly during off times. Late-night or early-morning flights can be much cheaper. Plus, you land in Europe by morning, ready to start your adventure without losing a day.
- Focus on major US airports. Sure, those smaller airports might occasionally offer a cheap fare to Europe, but more often than not, you’ll be hopping through a bigger hub like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, LA, or NYC before you’re Atlantic-bound.
- Know that prices can vary a lot between U.S. cities. For example, a flight to Iceland will cost more if you’re traveling from the west coast vs. east coast. If you’re visiting Europe from a secondary airport like in Louisville, KY, you may have to get connecting flights somewhere and pay a little more. Generally, the cheapest destinations to fly to in Europe should remain the same, regardless of where you’re flying from.

- Plan ahead. Book your flights at least two to three months in advance. This can give you access to early bird deals and better prices. Last-minute deals can sometimes be found, but they can also come with limited availability.
- Be creative with departure and arrival cities. Sometimes, flying into a nearby city or using a different airline can save money.
Consider the time of year you’re traveling. Peak travel seasons, such as summer and major holidays, tend to have higher prices and more demand. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you may be able to find better deals during the shoulder seasons.

Is It Cheaper to Fly to Europe From a Specific City or Region in the US?
Are you wondering about the cheapest airport to fly into Europe? Depending on the specific route and the availability of low-cost carriers, it can be cheaper to fly to Europe from certain cities or regions in the US.
For example, it may be less expensive to fly to Europe from cities on the East Coast, such as New York or Boston, than from major cities on the West Coast.
Is It Better to Fly to Europe at Night or in the Morning?
If you’re contemplating what time of day is best to find best flights to Europe, you’ll find this interesting.
There is no definitive answer on whether it’s better to fly to Europe at night or in the morning. However, there are some factors to consider when choosing your flight time.
One consideration is jet lag. If you’re traveling from the US to Europe, you’ll likely be crossing several time zones, disrupting your sleep patterns and leaving you tired and groggy. Some travelers find that flying at night can help them adjust to the new time zone more easily, as they can sleep on the flight and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to explore.
On the other hand, flying during the day can allow you to enjoy the view and take advantage of in-flight entertainment options. Additionally, some travelers prefer to arrive at their destination in the morning or early afternoon, giving them plenty of time to explore and settle in before bedtime.
Another factor to consider is the price. Flights at different times of day may vary in price depending on the airline, route, and time of year.
Why Is It So Much Cheaper to Fly in Europe Than the US?
There are several reasons why it’s often cheaper to fly in Europe than the US:
- Europe has a highly competitive airline market, with many budget airlines vying for customers.
- Europe has a more extensive and efficient rail network, making shorter flights less necessary. To attract customers, airlines must focus on providing low-cost options for longer flights.
- In the US, taxes and fees can make up a significant portion of the ticket price, while these costs are often lower in Europe.
- US airlines often face higher costs for fuel, labor, and infrastructure.
How Far in Advance Should I Book a Flight to Europe for Cheap Fares?
For low-priced fares, plan to book flights to Europe at least 3-4 months in advance. This is the timeframe when airlines tend to have the most availability.
Will Airfares to Europe Go Down in 2024?
Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that airfare prices to Europe will go down in 2024. As countries continue to ease COVID restrictions and travel demand picks up, prices may increase to all-time highs. This is especially true for this summer, as the combination of increased demand, high inflation, and high energy prices due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict may result in even higher prices.
As markets like the US jump at the opportunity to visit Europe, airlines may struggle to keep up with the demand, leading to higher prices. Other factors like currency exchange rates and economic conditions may also contribute to higher prices.
While it’s impossible to predict the future with certainty, travelers should prepare for the possibility of high airfare prices in the coming years. This may mean being flexible with travel dates, booking well in advance, and considering alternative airports and airlines to find the best deals.
