That’s why Chiang Mai is an essential stop on any Thailand itinerary.

Nimmanhaemin: Best For Nightlife, Modern Malls & Digital Nomads
If you’re wondering where to stay in Chiang Mai for nightlife then Nimmanhaemin is the best neighborhood for you.
Nimmanhaemin, or simply “Nimman,” is a trendy area popular among hip Thais, young travelers, and digital nomads. Being close to Chiang Mai University, the area has a youthful, lively atmosphere a vibrant nightlife.
With its trendy cafes, coworking spaces, bars, restaurants offering both international and thai cuisine, nightclubs and shopping malls, Nimman offers a more modern experience compared to the Old City.
The top attractions in Nimman area include:

Staying in Nimmanhaemin means you’ll have easy access to everything the city has to offer, as well as a large variety of accommodations, restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s also the closest area to Chiang Mai Zoo and Chiang Mai University.
It’s one of the more expensive areas to stay in Chiang Mai but there is a wide selection of hostels, budget and mid range boutique hotels and serviced apartments available to suit all budgets.

If you’re looking for a more peaceful stay or a luxury hotel in Chiang Mai, the Riverside is an excellent choice. Situated along the Mae Ping River, this area offers luxury resorts and charming waterside restaurants, perfect for couples and families seeking a relaxing or romantic stay.
Many Riverside resorts are conveniently located near the authentic local Warorot Market and the lively Night Bazaar, while the cultural attractions of the Old City are only 5 minute’s drive away. It’s a great choice for travellers seeking a tranquil, luxury stay with easy access to everything the city has to offer.
You can also take a Mae Ping River Cruise and experience the city from a different perspective and escape into the nature.
Best Resorts and Hotels on the Riverside
If a luxury hotel is what you’re after, Riverside is the best place to stay in Chiang Mai. The area does also offer a variety of accommodation options, from friendly homestays to luxurious resorts.

Night Bazaar: Best For Shopping, Nightlife and Budget Travellers
Another good option for where to stay in Chiang Mai is the Night Bazaar area. Open every evening, this bustling area is home to the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, a lively night market that stretches over a kilometer long on Chang Khlan Road.
At the night markets you’ll find everything from art and handicrafts to clothing and electronics. There’s numerous street food stalls, live music and you can even watch a Muay Thai fight event.
The Night Bazaar area is a great location to stay in as it’s only 15 minutes walk from the Old City. There are accommodations to suit all budgets, from backpacker hostels to luxury hotels. It’s a great place to stay for budget travelers, culture seekers, foodies and shopaholics.

If you’re seeking a more authentic local experience, the up-and-coming neighborhood of Santitham is a fantastic choice.
With it’s convenient location, just north of the Old City before the popular Nimmanahaeminda area, Santitham offers a less touristy and more relaxed atmosphere with a growing cafe and street food scene.
Santitham offers a good choice of affordable accommodations, from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels and monthly apartments. It’s a top choice for digital nomads and expats or anyone staying for a longer time.
I choose to live in Santitham because it’s close to both Nimman’s nightlife and coworking spaces and the Old City’s attractions. It is a more affordable, laid-back and genuine Chiang Mai experience with friendly locals and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Best Places to Stay in Nature near Chiang Mai
Suthep
If you’re looking for places to stay in Chiang Mai in nature, the Suthep area, at the base of Doi Suthep near the sprawling Chiang Mai University Campus and Angkaew Reservoir, is the closest option to the city.
You’ll be surrounded by mountains and jungle yet only 20 minutes drive to the Old City. There’s just a couple of peaceful boutique resorts in this area like the Merchant Villa and Kireethara Boutique Resort which offer a relaxing stay within easy reach of the city’s attractions.
Mae Rim
For a true nature escape the Mae Rim area is a good choice. This area is located further north of the city and is known for lush greenery, beautiful waterfalls, mountain views and elephant sanctuaries. It’s a popular place for nature and wellness retreats and home to Amaravati Wellness Center.

Tips for Planning Your Trip To Chiang Mai
Before you book your accommodation and embark on your Chiang Mai adventure, it’s essential to keep a few travel tips in mind like when to visit, how long to stay and how to get to Chiang Mai. Here’s what you need to know:
How To Get To Chiang Mai
There are several options when it comes to traveling to Chiang Mai. You can take a flight or an overnight train journey or bus from Bangkok. The easiest place to book tickets is on 12 Go Asia.
Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) receives flights from Bangkok, and other places in Thailand, and some other Asian cities. If you’re are traveling from further afield you’ll likely have to fly into Bangkok first and transfer to a short 1 hour domestic flight up to Chiang Mai.
Note that there are two airports in Bangkok so check which airport your connecting flight is leaving from. Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) receives mostly long haul international flights, while Don Mueang (DMK) is where you’ll find most of the domestic and regional budget airline flights.
There is a shuttle bus between the two airports, but be sure to allow enough time to travel across the often congested capital city, or you can take the BTS skytrain.
Most nationalities receive either a Visa Exemption or Visa on Arrival which are valid for 30 days. You can extend this once by another 30 days for 1,900 Thai Baht at the Immigration Office.
Regular taxis or songthaew are your best options for getting from Chiang Mai Airport to the city center. You can easily find both of these options outside the airport arrivals gate for a fixed fee.
Getting Around Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Old City is quite walkable, but for longer journeys, or if you stay in a different neighborhood, the readily available taxis, tuk tuks and songthaews (red trucks) make getting around Chiang Mai easy and affordable.
The most convenient way to arrange transportation is using the Grab App to order taxis online. Grab is a ride-hailing app similar to Uber, while songthaews are shared red trucks that run on routes (like a bus) that you can flag down.
Many Chiang Mai accommodations offer shuttle services and bike rentals, so be sure to check with your chosen hotel or resort for the services they can provide.
For those comfortable with driving a scooter or motorbike, renting one can be an efficient and affordable way to explore the city and its surroundings.
If you stay outside of the city you’ll benefit from renting a car or motorbike to have your own transportation to explore the countryside and get into the city centre.
The Best Time to Visit Chiang Mai
November through February are the best months to visit Chiang Mai, when the weather is cool, dry and comfortable.
During this period the temperature is mild and the humidity is low, making it the perfect time to get out and explore the city and its surroundings. The days are sunny and dry and the nights are cool, making this the ideal time to visit.
The worst time to visit during the hot and dry months of March to May, and during the burning season which can start in February and can increase air pollution in the city for a couple of months.
During the rainy season from June till October cloud cover and rain showers bring relief from the hot, humid summer weather, but the rain shouldn’t ruin your plans too much so it’s not a bad time to visit.
How Many Days to Spend in Chiang Mai
I recommend spending at least 3 days in Chiang Mai to give you enough time to see the highlights, but if you have more time then 4 or 5 days is better as this will allow you to explore at a more leisurely pace and discover some more hidden gems.
Staying in Chiang Mai for 5 days (or more) also gives you time to take some day trips out of the city to explore the nature, elephant sanctuaries, national parks, waterfalls and unique temples nearby so you’ll see all the highlights of northern Thailand.
