Commanders’ Kliff Kingsbury Told to Adopt Patrick Mahomes Playbook After Being Handed “Three-Headed Monster” With Jayden Daniels

The Washington Commanders’ new offensive coordinator has a lot more to do this season. Kliff Kingsbury is heading towards the responsibility of improving Washington’s offense, which has struggled for the past decade. His success in the role is crucial for the team’s overall success this season. However, before starting, Kingsbury has to keep some important pointers in mind and Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson can help him with that.

In the latest episode of the Nightcap podcast streamed some hours ago, Sharpe and Johnson talked about the current updates of the NBA and NFL world. With former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury’s new entry in Commanders being one of the fresh news in the football league, the podcast hosts handed over Patrick Mahomes’ playbook and ‘three-headed monster,’ who can help the coach to achieve his objective.

Chad Johnson highlighted that by using Jayden Daniels’ mobility, and involving the key receivers – Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson, Kingsbury can simplify the offense and ensure success. Helping out to save Kingsbury’s job with the new team, Johnson advised the coach, “I got three names for you. Imma gonna start with the first one. Jayden Daniels, if you want to keep your job, Imma give you two more names that go make your job easy. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, close the book. That’s all you need to know.”

He continued suggesting he not complicate things by saying, “I’m telling you there’s certain players that get you fired, and there are certain players that make sure you keep your job. And I just gave you three names offensively, everything else they know their role, run the offense to them little by little, spread it around. I just gave you a three headed monster that will keep you your job. Simple as that.” Not only that, Sharpe too had a piece of advice to offer Kingsbury. The host asked the new coach to adopt a strategy similar to Patrick Mahomes’ playbook for their “three-headed monster” offense.

The hosts emphasized the need to run the ball effectively, similar to how the Kansas City Chiefs utilize their running game with players like Isiah Pacheco, even if they don’t have a star like Derrick Henry. Additionally, they noted that Daniels, as a dual-threat quarterback, can execute both passing and running games effectively. This versatility is beneficial, given the strong supporting cast around him. The strategy is to leverage these strengths to achieve a successful season without unnecessary complexity in the offensive scheme.

What Kliff Kingsbury is offering now to his new team?

The Commanders have many new people in their facility, but Kliff Kingsbury stands out because of his background in developing quarterbacks like Case Keenum, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, and Patrick Mahomes. He was brought to Washington to improve an offense that had issues in 2023. And his energy and way of teaching have already made a positive impression on the players.

The Commanders are currently having a high-energy drill, called the “hype-drill,” where coaches encourage players as they run over bags spread out over about 20 yards.

Kingsbury is actively involved in this, shouting encouragement and motivating players. As per the reports, the coach aims to make the most of the Commanders’ players by focusing on their strengths. Although it’s common for offensive coordinators to say this, Kingsbury seems genuine. He listens to his players’ ideas while they develop the offense, believing that good ideas can come from anyone.

So, he would give every player a chance to speak. As he said, “A lot of times, these guys have been other places, whether it’s [San Francisco] San Fran or [Philadelphia] Philly or somewhere where they’ve had a lot of success. And if there’s a better way to do it, I’m all about it.”
