Robert MacIntyre won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour victory. That win got him into this week’s Memorial Tournament, the Travelers Championship, and, of course, the U.S. Open.
However, the 27-year-old will not be in Dublin, Ohio. Instead, he will head home to Scotland and spend time with his family. This decision seems to have come at the last minute, especially since the Scottish golfer did not know whether he would play.
“Yeah, well, I’ve not even spoken to my mom, my family, my team, my managers,” MacIntyre said Sunday night. “I’m guessing I’m going to have to (smiling). I would love to go home for a party, but I think we’ll probably play next week.”
A little over 12 hours later, he made his decision. The news became official when the PGA Tour Communications announced it on Monday. With his choice, Davis Thompson will replace him in the field at The Memorial Tournament.

Many players would jump at the chance to play at The Memorial, especially now that it is a Signature Event, but MacIntyre chose a trip back to Scotland instead.
His decision does not come as a shock. He mentioned that he was homesick multiple times, and with this victory, MacIntyre can take off a week.
“This is my fifth event in a row as well. I was planning to do U.S. Open qualifier tomorrow, 36 holes with my dad on the bag,” he said after his win. “Thankfully, that’s off the cards.”
His next event will likely be the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club June 13-16.
