For years, the Mizuno Wave Rider series has consistently delivered a versatile, durable and comfortable neutral running shoe for those who run a couple of times a week to stay in shape. However, with the latest update, the Wave Rider 28, Mizuno has introduced significant changes to the midsole by incorporating the brand’s Enerzy NXT cushioning, enhancing both comfort and responsiveness.
But what makes the Wave Rider 28 unique isn’t just its consistent performance year after year. Let’s get into the details.

Upper
The upper of the Wave Rider 28 is crafted from seamless, lightweight and breathable air mesh jacquard fabric, reducing the shoe’s weight by 10 grams compared to the Wave Rider 27. The new upper improvements significantly enhance breathability and comfort in the forefoot, keeping your feet cool and dry even on the hottest summer days.
The shoe also features an anatomical tongue that provides a comfortable and secure fit, hugging the instep and avoiding any annoying rubbing. The flared heel collar ensures easy on and off. However, if you have a wider foot, you may find the toe box a bit narrow. I always need to go up half a size in the Wave Rider to accommodate my foot shape, due to its narrower fit.
Midsole
My favourite feature of the Wave Rider 28 is the addition of Mizuno Enerzy NXT foam under the wave plate in the heel. This nitrogen-infused, bio-based foam mixed with EVA delivers a plush ride, providing comfort for all your long and easy runs. The midsole boasts a geometry-tweaked peba Wave Plate, creating an incredibly soft and well-cushioned ride. During easy runs, my stride felt more fluid with the combination of the Wave Plate and Enerzy foam. The innovative Mizuno Enerzy NXT foam in the heel dynamically adapts to movement, giving a reactive boost for heel-strikers.
The high drop and ample cushioning make this a solid daily trainer that’s ideal for casual runners who run a couple of times a week to stay in shape. However, the shoe lacks the responsiveness that performance-oriented runners might seek.
Outsole
The traction on the Wave Rider 28 is exceptional, thanks to its redesigned outsole, which offers improved grip and durability. With generous rubber coverage from heel to toe, the shoe provides excellent traction on both roads and trails. The X10 carbon rubber outsole ensures superior grip on various surfaces, whether wet or dry.
If you’re a runner who loves to feel the road or trail beneath your feet on every stride, the Wave Rider 28 is the perfect model for you.
Verdict
The Wave Rider 28 is a great daily trainer option for casual runners who run a few times a week and tackle distances between 5K and 10K. It provides great cushioning and durability without breaking the bank. However, if you’re seeking a more max-cushioned model for longer runs, I’d recommend the Mizuno Neo Vista, which features an all-Enerzy NXT midsole and a higher stack height.
What always impresses me about the Wave Rider series is its versatility. It’s lightweight and highly cushioned, offering a comfortable feel while remaining durable enough for everyday use. While these shoes may lack the responsiveness to chase down fast times, they’re perfect for those seeking a reliable daily trainer.
