Guelph Gryphons win sixth straight U Sports Track and Field Championships

There are some remarkable winning streaks in Canadian collegiate sports, and the University of Guelph Gryphons have built an impressive streak of their own. On Saturday, they won their sixth consecutive men’s and women’s U Sports team titles at the 2024 U Sports Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg.

The Guelph Gryphons now hold the record for the most national titles won by a men’s track and field program in Canadian university athletics. They finished the 2024 U Sports Championship with 89.5 points, beating the hosts (the University of Manitoba Bisons) by a mere 7.5 points.

The men’s team was led by middle-distance runner Max Davies, who won three U Sports gold medals for Guelph in the men’s 1,000m, 1,500m, and the 4x800m relay, amassing 30 points. Davies, Canada’s most recent sub-four-minute miler, set two U Sports records in the process, clocking 3:44.00 in the men’s 1,500m and 2:21.00 in the men’s 1,000m. The 20-year-old was also awarded the Canadian U Sports Male Athlete of the Year for his incredible season.

On the women’s side, it was Gryphons sprinter Nicole McKenzie who earned 28 of Guelph’s total 115 points. McKenzie won gold in the women’s 300m in a huge personal best of 37.99 seconds, shaving half a second off her previous best. She also helped Guelph secure another gold and silver in the women’s 4x400m relay and 4x200m relay events. This marks the eighth national track and field title for Guelph’s women’s program.

Additionally, Guelph Gryphons’ head coach, Jason Kerr, was awarded U Sports Coach of the Year on both the men’s and women’s sides.
