How to Use a Grill Basket for Veggies

Learn how to use grill basket for veggies in order to make the best grilled vegetables ever! A grill basket can help making grilling veggies easy, because they don’t fall through cracks!

If you love grilled vegetables as much as I do, then you’ll really like the ease and convenience of using a grill basket to get this job done. That’s why I’m sharing my Step-By-Step guide on How to Use a Grill Basket for Veggies, plus my favorite recipe for grilled vegetables.

Living in California, I grill vegetables year round; I just change up the variety of veggies depending on the season. Some of the best vegetables to grill include eggplants, summer squash, onions, peppers, asparagus, potatoes, mushrooms, cauliflower, winter squash, sweet potatoes, winter squash, potatoes, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, but you can choose beyond these options.

The act of grilling brings on the caramelization process, which is why they are so delicious and versatile in numerous recipes. All you have to do is prepare a grilled vegetables marinade, drizzle it over your prepared vegetables, transfer to the grill basket, and grill away! You can use grilled vegetables as a simple side-dish, as well as a topping for pasta, salads, grain bowls, pizza, and sandwiches.

Vegetables grilled to perfection using a grill basket.

I acquired my grill basket a few years ago, and I just love it! Now, I have a couple of different types of grill baskets. The great thing is that grill baskets can holds lots of vegetables and allow for the heat to penetrate through the grids in the basket to allow for browning, yet all of my favorite veggies don’t fall through the cracks of the grill, or stick to the grill. And you can simply shake it or toss with tongs to keep turning the veggies, which means you don’t have to use as much oil. In fact, if you are avoiding added oils in your diet, this is a great way to grill your veggies. Check out the complete recipe for grilled vegetables pictured here.

Step-By-Step Guide:

Select your favorite seasonal vegetables for grilling. Some of my favorites (pictured above) are: broccoli, zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, and red onions. Hint: Small vegetables, like mini zucchini, eggplant, and carrots are great for grilling. About 3 pounds of trimmed fresh veggies will make about 8 servings.
Wash and slice the veggies for grilling. Try slicing small vegetables in half lengthwise for grilling, and slice onions, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes into wedges.
Arrange the vegetables in a 9 x 13-inch pan.
Prepare a grilled vegetables marinade with lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, fresh herbs (as desired, I have oregano, tarragon, and thyme from my garden here), salt, and pepper.
Stir together the marinade in a small dish.
Drizzle the marinade over the fresh, sliced veggies.
Distribute marinade into vegetables by tossing them with tongs. Marinate for about 1 hour before grilling, tossing with tongs occasionally.
Heat the grill over medium heat, and place the grill basket on the grill racks.
Transfer the vegetables with tongs to the grill basket. Reserve any marinade at the bottom of the dish.
Grill over medium heat until vegetables are tender and golden brown, without overcooking. Brush with reserved marinade during the grilling process.
Turn vegetables with tongs or shake the grill basket, allowing the vegetables to get equal surface time. Some vegetables will cook more quickly, so you can remove those that are done and allow the others to continue to cook. It may take up to 45 minutes to cook some vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, while other tender vegetables, such as mushrooms, cook very quickly.
When vegetables are grilled to your satisfaction, remove from the grill basket, and serve.
Enjoy!
