TRINIDAD – Hyatt Regency hotel review: Best luxury place to stay in Port of Spain – Chris Travel Blog

Seaside Terrace TRINIDAD - Hyatt Regency hotel review: Best luxury place to stay

My trip to Trinidad & Tobago was the first long haul trip post-pandemic and a logical choice because KLM, my favourite airline, started direct flights from Amsterdam. Trinidad has several luxury hotels but after careful selection Hyatt Regency Port of Spain was my choice. The Hyatt Regency Trinidad is in the capital Port of Spain on Trinidad, one of the two islands of the nation, the other being Tobago.

I booked a standard room but for Hyatt loyalty members there was a nice upgrade available. It’s always recommended if you travel a lot to be a member of the hotel loyalty programs. I was right choosing the hotel as it truly was a memorable stay and I highly recommend booking it for your trip to Trinidad. In this Hyatt Trinidad hotel review I’ll share with you my experience and what to expect. Join me on a Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel tour.

Hyatt Trinidad hotel review

The Hyatt Trinidad is in downtown Port of Spain on the coast build on a stretch of reclaimed land. The location is perfect just 30 minutes from the airport and close to everything you must see in Port of Spain. This includes shops, museum, parks and more within walking distance. Trinidad isn’t known for its beaches, that’s Tobago, but Maracas Beach can be reached in about 45 minutes by taxi.

My flight from Amsterdam arrived relatively late evening and when I got to the hotel the restaurants food service was about to close. The staff made my check-in smooth and efficient. They made sure bags were sent to the room so that I could go for dinner first. I like it when staff thinks with me so that everything goes smooth. Everything with a friendly smile.

The lobby is spacious with plenty of staffed desks to assist and a large seating area. All the shared areas are “safe areas” (due to pandemic) so from the lobby to go there you’ll have to show proof of vaccination. It is a good thing to feel safe. Everything is modern decorated in pastel and earth colors. The lobby leads to the restaurants and seaside terraces, coffee shop and elevators. Let’s have a closer look at the rooms, facilities, and restaurants.

The rooms at Hyatt Trinidad

The Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain has various rooms from standard rooms to a beautiful presidential suite. I had the option to have a peak inside it: it’s huge! For myself, such a suite is a bit over the top, so I opted for a standard room. This upgrades, if available, for a Hyatt Globalist to a nice suite. The regular rooms and the suites are the same except for the sliding door with access to the living area and small pantry.

The rooms are large and lovely decorated. Partial wooden (tiles) floors and partial carpet. Colors range in the pastel range from blue to purple-ish. Enough comfortable seating and the bed was simply amazing. Not to soft, not to hard so it should work for everyone. I received complimentary water daily and new coffee cups to make coffee in the room. The bathrooms are large, with all the amenities one expects from a luxury hotel. I can’t think of anything missing in the room.

Hyatt Trinidad facilities

Hyatt Regency Trinidad has plenty of facilities ranging from leisure to business facilities. The latter I haven’t experienced but the leisure facilities I did. If you want to work out there is the gym. It’s well equipped with plenty of gym machines. Unfortunately, my schedule on Trinidad & Tobago was so full that I had no time to use it. At the other hand I had some good exercise during my Port of Spain city walk. I did use the pool and the pool is an amazing infinity pool with views over the ocean. Plenty of seats so it doesn’t feel crowded when there are more people. The pool bar serves cool drinks although for real beer you have to Tommy’s Craft Brewery. Of course, just before my flight, I got a nice sunburn. I thought two hours sun were all right but I learned, again, the hard way to use sunblock. Be warned.

The Hyatt Regency Trinidad SPA is a real treat. It offers a wide variety of services including massages and beauty treatments. The massage was very professional and of high quality. Do make an appointment in time as it attracts a lot of locals as well and schedules fill quick.

Dining & Drinking at Hyatt Trinidad

Trinidad & Tobago is known for its diverse society and this you’ll find in the food as well. I started each day at the Waterfront restaurant with a delicious breakfast. One can sit outdoors on the terrace as well, but I do prefer my breakfast indoors with air conditioning. Their open kitchen prepared my sunny side up eggs in a perfect way. Of course, with two double espressos.

I haven’t tried their sushi bar as I just stayed for a few nights, but what I saw coming out looked very delicious. The only dinner was in-room as I simply had to try a curried crab and dumpling before I had to checkout. It was so good!

I did have various cocktails and beers at the Lobby Bar which shares the terrace with the Waterfront restaurant. It’s great to have a cold beer in the evening on the seaside. In the lobby you’ll also find Cinnamon which serves to go coffee and sandwiches. Perfect for someone like me that is addicted to caffeine.

With plenty of food and beverage outlets you don’t have to leave the hotel. I do recommend however to go out for some Trinidad doubles when you do a Port of Spain city walk. After a day out sightseeing the infinity pool is the place to be with a nice cocktail in your hand. I loved it.

I didn’t use my room a lot but did have time to move some work from there including typing this review. I loved the Hyatt Regency views towards the ocean as well and highly recommend staying if you’re visiting Trinidad & Tobago.
