Olympics medal count 2024: USA in great shape ahead of track and field

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been absolutely stunning so far. We’re still in the early stages of the games, especially for the United States, but thus far the team is performing very strongly and winning some medals nobody expected, like their bronze in Women’s Rugby, and bronze in Men’s Team Gymnastics.

Dozens of medals yet to be handed out in Track and Field — where the United States are expected to have a big games, but already the team has a fairly commanding lead in at least one ranking system. We make this delineation, because there’s the official International Olympic Committee medal count, and then the total medal count.

These differ wildly, because the IOC puts a premium on golds above everything else. For instance, a nation that wins one gold but nothing else will rank higher on the IOC tally than a country with no golds, but five silvers for instance. Meanwhile total medals just amasses gold, silver and bronze into one total count — regardless of the color of those medals.

Debate rages over which is the proper way to count the medals, but here are the top-20 in each count.
