Balancing Motherhood and Elite Athletics

As the Paris 2024 Olympics wraps up, we’re taking a moment to celebrate some incredible mums who are not just raising families but also competing at the highest level of sports. These amazing women show us that motherhood and athletic excellence can go hand in hand!

Today, we’re sharing the inspiring stories of three Aussie Olympians – Alyce Wood (Kayaking), Genevieve Gregson (Marathon), and Keesja Gofers (Water Polo). Their experiences balancing motherhood with elite-level training are sure to motivate all of us mums, whether we’re aiming for gold medals or just trying to squeeze in a quick workout between nappy changes!

Embracing the Challenges

Each of these athletes faced unique challenges in their return to sports after giving birth. Alyce Wood found herself balancing the expectations of being both a new mum and an athlete. “The guilt pulling me both ways has been real,” she’s shared, “but it’s also taught me how to prioritise my time and energy.”

Genevieve Gregson had to overcome doubts about her ability to return to form. “Although I say I enjoy a challenge, it is obviously normal to have a lot of doubt creep in at times,” she’s revealed to Women’s Health Magazine. But she learned to trust her journey and be flexible with her progress.

Keesja Gofers faced the logistical challenges of training schedules that didn’t align with childcare hours. “If I didn’t have the incredible support of my husband, my mum and dad, and my husband’s parents, this would not be possible for us,” she’s said.

Finding New Strength

Interestingly, these mums found that motherhood actually enhanced their athletic performances in unexpected ways. Genevieve has noted, “I think I am mentally stronger in a way because I have a whole new perspective when it comes to my running.”

Alyce discovered a new source of motivation: “Kids teach you that you don’t need to sweat the small stuff. When they’re learning to walk they fall over a thousand times, but get up a thousand more, always with a smile on their face and so much determination. This is now how I approach my training.”

Keesja found inspiration in her daughter’s determination: “Watching T learn skills in front of my eyes has been one of the most delightful things I have experienced. The best part is how determined she is.”

Lessons for Healthy Mummies

While we may not be Olympic athletes, there’s so much we can learn from these amazing mums:

  1. Be flexible: Some days you might not hit your personal best, and that’s okay!
  2. Find your support network: Whether it’s family, friends, or other mums, having support is crucial.
  3. Take it one step at a time: Set small, achievable goals and celebrate each milestone.
  4. Remember your ‘why’: Whether it’s showing your kids the importance of perseverance or taking care of your own health, keep your motivation in mind.
  5. Listen to your body: Take rest when you need it, and don’t be afraid to modify your workouts.

Mums, remember – whether you’re training for the Olympics or just trying to fit in a quick Healthy Mummy workout, you’re all superstars in our eyes!
