Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen has done it again. The Olympic 5,000m champion has smashed Daniel Komen’s 3,000m world record by more than two seconds, running a phenomenal 7:17.55 at Silesia Diamond League in Poland on Sunday.
Even Ingebrigtsen himself looked shocked after he crossed the line. Olympic 10,000m silver medallist, Berihu Aregawi of Ethiopia, finished second, only half a second off Komen’s world record himself, with 7:21.28. And Yomif Kejelcha, also of Ethiopia, who holds the world record in the indoor mile, was third, in 7:28.44. Canada’s Moh Ahmed, who was fourth in the 10,000m at Paris, finished sixth, in 7:31.96, breaking Charles Philibert-Thiboutot’s Canadian record of 7:35.73, set only a few weeks ago at Paris Diamond League, by almost four seconds.

Organizers and fans knew Ingebrigtsen had his sights set on the world record, but also that it was an ambitious quest, having stood since 1996 at 7:20.67. After four laps, the field had split into two packs, with two pacers leading Ingebrigtsen, followed by Kejelcha, Addisu Yiune of Ethiopia (who faded to 10th but ran a PB of 7:33.94) and Aregawi; they were about a second off Komen’s split. They went through 2,000m in 4:55.21, to Komen’s 4:53. But Ingebrigtsen is known to fun very fast final laps–considerably faster than Komen’s 59s. He was at 6:22 at the bell, and needed to close in 58s to break the record, which proved not to be a problem at all.
Marco Arop dominates in 800m
Olympic silver medallist Marco Arop got his own back on rival Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, who had gotten the better of him again at Lausanne Diamond League just two days ago, with a dominant win in Poland on Sunday. Arop took the race out hard, gaining a slight gap early in the race and holding on to beat Wanyonyi by a second and a half in a meeting record of 1:41.86. Wanyonyi ran 1:43.23, and the U.S.’s Bryce Hoppel was third in 1:43.32.

Meeting record for Femke Bol
Dutch athlete Femke Bol, who was disappointed with a bronze medal in the women’s 400m hurdles at Paris 2024, was victorious in the event in Poland on Sunday, taking the win in 52.40, a meeting record. Olympic silver medallist Anna Cockrell of the U.S., was second, in 52.88, and Rushell Clayton of Jamaica third, in 53.11.
