Keto Dumplings
If you have been following my low-carb blog for a long time now, you know that I already made a similar steamed bread loaf recipe using the same ingredients but only in a different shape. The whole family enjoyed this bread so much that my daughter kept on asking to make more. It is THAT delicious.
What I also like about making the dumpling dough recipe is that I can shape and steam it however I want. It could also be filled with whatever you like. Sweet or savory. It is your call. I am sure that with this keto recipe I prepared for you, you can enjoy these dumplings even more without thinking about carbs.
Why Dumplings Are Steamed Instead of Baked?
Steaming has its perks when it comes to making dumplings.
- Steamed dumplings turn out soft and tender, with a nice chewy texture that’s enjoyable with every bite. It’s a gentle cooking method that prevents them from drying out.
- Steaming also ensures the dumplings cook evenly, unlike some baked goods where the insides can be undercooked.
- Steaming is the traditional way dumplings have been made in many Asian cultures for centuries, and it still works perfectly today.
It’s quicker and easier than baking, with delicious dumplings ready in just a few minutes.
Is This Perfect for Making Keto Chicken and Dumpling Recipes?
Definitely! That is why it is called chicken and dumplings in the first place because a chicken soup is paired with soft and tender dumplings. Once you tried making this recipe, you will know how satisfying it is to eat these dumplings when they absorb the flavorful bone or chicken broth perfectly. They literally melt in your mouth.
It is one of those comfort meals you want after a long day. And knowing they are keto-friendly makes it even more interesting because there is nothing better than having a delicious and healthy meal at the same time.
How To Make The Best Keto Dumplings Recipe
Let us start making these softly steamed dumplings you can have as your side dish or the perfect pair for chicken soup or any dipping sauces to enjoy as comfort food.
Follow this simple recipe guide to make the best gluten-free and grain-free soft dumplings.
Kitchen Gadgets Needed:
- Cooking Pot: A large pot is essential for holding water and generating steam. It should be deep enough to accommodate the steaming stand, and the lid should fit securely to trap the steam inside.
- Steaming Stand: Use a steamer basket or rack to hold the dumplings above the boiling water in the pot. It allows the steam to circulate the dumplings, cooking them evenly.
- Hand Mixer: This hand mixer is for handling the dough mixture since it is easier if you use one instead of doing it manually.
- Parchment Paper: Parchment paper lines the steaming stand or basket to prevent the dumplings from sticking while they cook.
Dumplings Ingredients:
- Eggs: Eggs help hold the ingredients together and provide structure to the dumplings.
- Mozzarella: You can use shredded mozzarella cheese, primarily found in the refrigerated cheese section in your nearby grocery stores.
- Almond Flour: Use homemade almond flour or buy gluten-free ones in health food stores or online.
- Psyllium Husk: A psyllium husk is a supplement that helps bind the dough and gives this recipe a more traditional dumpling texture. It is mainly found near gluten-free baking ingredients in grocery stores down the baking aisle.
- Coconut Oil: Mix coconut oil into the dough to add healthy fats and mild flavor. It contributes to the moisture and richness of the dough.
- Almond Milk: Use dairy-free almond milk or make one at home using activated almonds. It adds moisture to the dough without the carbs found in regular milk.
- Coconut Flour: A low-carb flour that absorbs moisture well, helping to balance the texture of the dough. A homemade coconut flour made with fresh coconut shreds is also safe.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOW CARB DUMPLINGS RECIPE
First Step: Prepare Ingredients
Gather all the ingredients by placing each of them in small containers for easy preparation.
Second Step: Mix Eggs
Using your hand mixer, mix the eggs until it turns smooth and fluffy.
Third Step: Add The Rest Of The Ingredients
Once the egg is smooth, add the rest of the ingredients, including the psyllium husk, which will be the ingredient that will turn the mixture into a dough. Just keep mixing until the consistency is no longer liquid.
After mixing all the ingredients, place the dough into a bowl and rest. Cover with plastic and place in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Fourth Step: Portion and Shape
Take the dumpling dough from the fridge and portion it into small pieces.
Shape the portioned dough into small dough balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring each has spaces between them.
Fifth Step: Steam
Start preparing the steamer after shaping them to your desired size and shape. No need to worry about not having a steamer because you can use any large pot in your kitchen and add water at the bottom. Bring the water to a boil and place the steaming stand on top.
Add parchment paper on top with oil on the surface and add the dumpling balls. Cover the pot and let it steam for 15 minutes.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Rest the dough: Resting your dough is important for almond flour and coconut flour to absorb the moisture better, making it easier to shape them.
- Shaping: Put oil on your hands before shaping the dough so it won’t stick, resulting in a perfectly shaped dough ball.
- Parchment paper: Placing parchment paper onto the steaming stand will help the dumplings stay intact and look beautiful once cooked.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Is This Gluten Free?
Yes, these keto dumplings are completely free of gluten, as I only use gluten-free ingredients such as almond flour, coconut flour, and psyllium husk powder. They are all naturally gluten-free alternatives to regular flour and wheat flour.
Can I Steam Dumplings In An Instant Pot?
Using an instant pot to make these dumplings is okay and pretty easy. Add water to the instant pot and place a steamer basket or trivet inside, then arrange the dumplings in a single layer on the parchment paper, ensuring they do not touch each other.
Close the lid and set the venting knob to the “sealing” position. Select the “steam” function and set the timer to 3-5 minutes, depending on the size of the dumplings. Once the timer goes off, perform a quick release by turning the venting knob to the “venting” position.
What To Serve With These Comfort Food Dumplings?
These keto dumplings are best when paired with sauces like sausage gravy and sweet cranberry sauce. But it is also perfect for soups like chicken noodle soup or creamy soups like cream of mushroom soup and tomato soup.
It is also popular for protein dishes containing roasted meats like duck, chicken breasts or chicken thighs, pork, and goose.
The refrigerator is your best storage option if you have leftovers or plan to eat your dumplings within a few days. Just let them cool completely, transfer them into an airtight container, keep the lid securely closed, and place them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Can I Freeze Them?
Yes. For longer storage, freezing is a great option for you because, in this way, you can have your dumplings ready to go for a quick meal whenever you want. Place the dumplings onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and pop them in the freezer until firm. Once they are firm, transfer them into a freezer-safe resealable bag and freeze. They can last for up to 3 months without losing quality.
You can reheat them in a microwave, steamer, or skillet. Cover them with a damp paper towel to keep them moist if microwaving. If steaming or pan-frying, a few minutes should do the trick until they are heated.
