Fuel your UTMB-watching with these French, Italian and Swiss-inspired snacks

UTMB week is upon us, and whether you’re cheering for Katie Schide as she takes on the Alps or rooting for Jim Walmsley to successfully defend his title, you’ll need some snacks to keep your energy up while watching the race. Since the runners will be traversing through France, Switzerland and Italy, why not honour those countries with some easy-to-make treats? Here are three delicious snacks inspired by the very regions our runners will be conquering.

French-inspired mini Croque Monsieurs

What’s more French than a Croque Monsieur? This classic sandwich gets a bite-sized twist that’s perfect for snacking. Schide might be toughing it out on the trail, but you can savour every bite from the comfort of your couch.

To make, grab some slices of baguette, top with a thin layer of Dijon mustard, ham, and a mix of Gruyère and Emmental cheese (heck, use whatever cheese you have handy). Pop them in the oven at 375°F until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Voilà! You’ve got a warm, cheesy snack that’s easy to enjoy while you’re glued to your screen.

Swiss-inspired Raclette skewers

Switzerland is famous for its cheese, and Raclette is the ultimate in gooey, melty goodness. While Walmsley charges through the Swiss mountains, you can channel that same energy into devouring these savoury bites.

For a quick and fun take on this Swiss classic, simply thread boiled baby potatoes, pickles, and cubes of Raclette cheese onto skewers. Heat them under the broiler until the cheese starts to melt, then enjoy with a side of mustard. It’s a snack that feels indulgent without all the fuss.

Italian-inspired bruschetta

No snack roundup would be complete without a nod to Italy, and bruschetta is as simple as it is delicious. It’s fresh, light, and the perfect way to feel connected to the Italian leg of UTMB.

Start with slices of rustic Italian bread, toasted to perfection. Rub each slice with a clove of garlic, drizzle with olive oil, and top with a mixture of diced tomatoes, fresh basil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Add a little balsamic glaze if you’re feeling fancy.
