ON On Cloud X 4 Introduction
The On Cloud X4 is an extra flexible training shoe that works well for any type of workout. I even like wearing them for short runs or speed and agility-type workouts. Their overall stability is fantastic.
They are On’s fourth iteration of the Cloud X . Looking back at last year’s version you will notice little to no difference. Checking On’s website about the shoe gives you little to no information about many updates.
They are on the pricier side for $150 but that is becoming more of a standard price. On creates shoes that are of the highest quality and top technology.
I can attest that I have not tried a pair of Ons that I didn’t like or that didn’t last. Weighing in at 11.15oz, they feel very lightweight. They have a 7mm drop to them with a slight arch support but I don’t think they would be a good choice for an individual with flatter feet.
Some of their signature technology include the X-shaped Speedboard, the Helion super form, the midfoot cage, breathable recycled mesh upper, plush materials, and a runner outsole for excellent traction.
On makes their shoes with “clouds” or pods on the underfoot. These collapse on impact and expand on take-off. Depending on the shoe, the pods have more or less give to them. The Cloudtec technology combined with a firmer plate, gives the Cloud X4 a snappy feel to them.
The Nike Interact Run is a similar shoe I have recently tested out. They both offer a comfortable and stable ride with a breathable mesh upper.
You could also compare them to the Altra Outroad but without the heavier tread. Both have a nice ground feel to them that allows you to feel confident in making direction changes without feeling like you will roll an ankle.
Other popular training shoes that a nice choices would be the Nike Metcon and the Reebok Nano. You can expect to pay close to the same price but I think the comfort and versatility that the Cloud X4 offer makes them the best choice.
ON On Cloud X 4 First Impressions
My first impression after opening the box was a positive one. On always impresses me with their style and build. I tested out the previous model and knew what to expect. They look almost identical to the past model. I couldn’t tell from just looking at them what was upgraded.
Putting them on for the first time, I noticed how stable, cushioned, yet firm they were. I tend to like a firmer training shoe. What’s new with X4? From just a performance standpoint, there isn’t anything that sticks out but it is more comfortable than the X3.
The tongue and the boot are updated ever so slightly. You will notice that they have added some thickness to the tongue. The boot or around the ankle also has some more padding to it. This gives the shoe more overall comfort which makes it easy to wear all day.
My first workout in them was a mix of various body-weighted exercises with running between sets. There was no need for a break in period. They have a socklike feel to them and give you just the right amount of cushion. Each exercise I felt confident and secure in knowing I would have no issues with my feet sliding or feeling unstable. I do have issues with certain training shoes that make me feel like I am jamming my toes toward the front of the toe box. That is not the case with the X4’s.
I have also taken them out for a few runs on the road and gravel paths. Each run was under 5K and they performed well.
ON On Cloud X 4 Upper
The upper is made from a recycled mesh material. On, like most companies are steering towards a more environmentally friendly way to create their products. This upper is made from at least 90% recycled polyester. Breathability is key when talking about this upper. I have used it for many hot and humid training sessions and they have helped my feet not become overheated.
Another feature that can be overlooked would be the Dual-density Sockliner. Although minor, it adds an extra layer of comfort and support that makes it a shoe I can wear for hours and hours without discomfort.
ON On Cloud X 4 Sole Unit
The midsole has its signature On brand midsole look to it with one layer of the iconic “cloud.” It is made up of Helion super foam, which provides cushioning for soft landings and comfort. This particular foam was made to be extremely durable as well as lightweight.
Making them able to be used for a range of workouts, from lifting sessions to runs. Along with the foam, the shoe has an X-shaped Speedboard that allows the forefoot to be flexible. In turn, you’re able to have an explosive toe-off.
Looking at the outsole, it’s made up of the CloudTec Outsole. I have taken them out on various surfaces and weather conditions. They perform remarkably well with no slipping and deliver a smooth and stable ride.
ON On Cloud X 4 Conclusions
Overall, the On Cloud X 4 stands out for its versatility and comfort, making it a solid choice if you want a shoe that can handle both running and various gym activities.
