Connor Bedard runs speedy time on Vancouver’s Grouse Grind

The Grouse Grind, a 2.9-kilometre trail with a punishing 850-metre elevation gain, is a rite of passage for many Vancouver-based runners. The steep climb draws athletes and tourists alike, offering a rewarding view of the city from the summit of Grouse Mountain. Over the weekend, Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard took on the challenge, finishing the Grind in an impressive 37 minutes.

Nicknamed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster,” the trail tests stamina and strength. Bedard’s time put him just three minutes behind 2018 Boston Marathon winner Yuki Kawauchi, who posted a best time of 34 minutes.

The fastest recorded time remains 23 minutes and 48 seconds, set by former Canadian pro cyclist Sebastian Salas in 2010. Bedard was joined on the hike by former NHL player and podcaster Paul Bissonnette, who marvelled at the 19-year-old’s fitness. “6 a.m. Sunday morning Grouse Grind with the NHL’s reigning Calder winner. Bedard is a machine,” Bissonnette shared in an X post. “37-minute time. Now he’s going to skate. The NHL is in good hands, folks.”

Bissonnette completed the Grind in 52:45, a personal best, although still 15 minutes behind Bedard. According to AllTrails.com, it typically takes the average person an hour and 42 minutes to reach the summit.

Beyond the physical challenge, the Grouse Grind offers stunning rewards at the top with panoramic views of Vancouver’s Lower Mainland. For Bedard, the Grouse Grind is a perfect off-season test, blending the intensity of training with the beauty of nature. After a stellar rookie season where he scored 22 goals and 39 assists, the young NHL star showed his dedication to staying at the top of his game.
