Collegiate cross-country runner dies after cardiac arrest mid-race

On Saturday, an American college student competing at a NCAA cross-country meet in Georgia died after collapsing midway through the race.

It was later announced by local news that Nefertari Holston, 23, went into cardiac arrest and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The third-year student-athlete from Dothan, Ala., native was taking part in the Julius Johnson Invitational women’s 5K at Middle Georgia State Invite in Macon, Ga. The area experienced warm temperatures on Saturday morning, reaching 31 C by 8 a.m.

Holston’s sudden death has shocked the Wesleyan College and Macon community. “The entire Wesleyan Community is deeply saddened by the death of one of our students,” Wesleyan College spokesperson Drew Davidson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time. This student has been a vibrant part of our campus, and this loss will no doubt impact us all.”
