3 Thanksgiving snacks (from leftovers) to fuel your long run


For runners, Thanksgiving leftovers aren’t just about reheating the turkey; they can be the ultimate fuel for hitting the trails or logging some road miles the next day. Here are three easy-to-make snacks that make the most of your holiday leftovers. These on-the-go treats come together quickly and are packed with nutrients to energize you for miles.

Pumpkin pie smoothie

Transform leftover pumpkin pie filling into a smoothie for a delicious pre or post-run boost.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
1/2 banana
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1 cup almond milk (or milk of choice)
1 tsp maple syrup (optional)
Dash of pumpkin pie spice

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Pour into a to-go cup, and you’re ready to fuel up.

Why it’s great fuel: Pumpkin is packed with fibre, and Greek yogurt adds protein for a satisfying post-run treat that’s creamy, comforting and seasonally festive.

Sweet potato energy balls

Inspired by classic sweet potato casserole, but lighter and more portable.

Ingredients:

1 cup mashed sweet potatoes (roasted, without marshmallows)
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup almond butter
1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

Mix the mashed sweet potatoes, oats, almond butter, honey and cinnamon in a bowl.
Roll into small balls, about one inch in diametre.
Roll each ball in chopped pecans and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Why it’s great fuel: Sweet potatoes provide a natural source of carbs and are rich in potassium–perfect for post-run recovery or an energy boost on the go.

Turkey and cranberry wraps

This twist on a Thanksgiving turkey sandwich combines classic flavours with an added dose of greens.

Ingredients:

whole-wheat tortilla or wrap
sliced turkey breast (leftovers are perfect)
1 tbsp cranberry sauce
1/4 avocado, sliced
handful of spinach or mixed greens

Instructions:

Lay the tortilla flat and spread cranberry sauce in a thin layer.
Add turkey slices, avocado and greens.
Roll up and slice in half for easy snacking.

Why it’s great fuel: The turkey provides lean protein, while the cranberry sauce and avocado add healthy fats and antioxidants, making it a balanced snack to fuel your next run.
