While summer trips to the Jersey Shore are a beloved tradition for many, travelers would be well served to look beyond the beach and plan outside of the warmer months. From the opening of the hotly anticipated Pendry Natirar, a country estate in Somerset County, to incredible farm-to-table food in West Cape May, the Garden State is making a name for itself as a year-round destination.
One of the best times to visit New Jersey? The holidays. Fans of the festive season probably know of Cape May. Fewer are likely familiar with Augusta. For those who haven’t heard of it, it’s a small town in Sussex County (about an hour away from Newark Liberty International Airport) that gets a merry and bright upgrade come December.
Yuletide chasers will want to time their trip with the annual German Christmas Market (Dec. 6 to 8). The market, which began in 2001 with a small group of German-American volunteers, has grown into the largest holiday market in the state. Expect 150 vendors selling homemade goods — from crafts and jewelry to candles and seasonal food such as gingerbread — plus family-friendly activities like a carousel, pony and wagon rides, a petting zoo, and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Of course, there’s plenty of cheer for the rest of the month, too, thanks to Skylands Stadium Christmas Light Show & Village, a hub of holiday magic with enchanting attractions for all ages. First up on the festive itinerary: the mile-long drive-thru with more than two million twinkling lights.
In need of last-minute presents? Pick up mugs and mittens at the indoor market. Stroll through the glittering light tunnel and watch kids’ eyes fill with wonder. Don’t miss the chance to pose for souvenir photos with Santa. Hungry? Roasting s’mores on a fire pit is sure to be a hit. It’s never too chilly for ice cream. Hot cocoa makes the experience even warmer and sweeter.
Want to cram in a few runs in between shopping and sipping eggnog? Hit the slopes at Mountain Creek Resort. After all that merriment and frosty fun, travelers looking for somewhere warm and cozy to snooze can choose between Crystal Springs Resort and Alpine Haus Bed & Breakfast Inn in neighboring Vernon.
