Winter Storm Cora Moves to Southeast, Canceling Hundreds of Flights at Atlanta, Charlotte, and More

Winter Storm Cora has continued to move east, resulting in hundreds of flight disruptions at major hubs.

Following hundreds of cancellations in Dallas this week, the storm has now caused significant disruptions across the Southeast. According to flight tracker FlightAware, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) canceled 383 flights on Friday. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) was not much better off, canceling 293 flights.

According to the National Weather Service, a dangerous mixture of snow and ice stretched from Arkansas through Virginia, while Atlanta has seen one to four inches of snow in some areas and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. 

“Significant ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause widespread and long-lasting power outages,” the NWS in Atlanta warned. “Travel could be nearly impossible.”

In Charlotte, snow and sleet accumulations of up to two inches with up to a quarter of an inch of ice are expected. 

CLT said it would work with nearly 40 snow removal and de-icing vehicles to ensure safe and efficient operations.

“As winter weather approaches, #CLTairport will remain open and operational, no matter the conditions,” the airport wrote in a post on X. “Additionally, all parking lots and decks will remain open and will be pretreated to minimize the impact of ice and snow. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airline for flight status updates before arriving at the Airport.”

Meanwhile, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has still has over 200 flight cancellations.

Several airlines, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, have issued flight waivers for the Southeast in response to the winter storm.

Texas-based American has the most flight cancellations at over 500.

Winter Storm Cora is expected to impact the Southeast throughout Friday, with winter weather alerts in Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Little Rock, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, and Raleigh, according to The Weather Channel. Precipitation should end by Saturday. Currently, only a few flights are canceled at Hartsfield-Jackson International and Charlotte Douglas International for Saturday, Jan. 11.
