My ski buddy Victoria and I had long dreamed of a winter retreat in Jackson Hole—days spent exploring the rugged grandeur of the Tetons and nights sipping cocktails in a cozy boutique mountain lodge. When the iconic Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa was reimagined and reopened, we knew it was the perfect place to experience the magic of Wyoming in winter—a basecamp for all our adventures.
A Warm Wyoming Welcome

Upon stepping into the Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa, we were immediately enveloped in the perfect harmony of mountain charm and refined elegance. The design by Rowland+Broughton seamlessly weaves together the warmth of rich timber beams, the grounding presence of natural stone, and the softness of inviting textures, crafting an atmosphere that feels both intimate and sophisticated. The scent of fresh pine lingered in the air, while the soft flicker of the two-sided fireplace bathed the lounge in a warm glow—making it an irresistible spot to unwind. Every detail, from handcrafted furnishings and curated artwork reflecting Wyoming’s rugged beauty to the quirky rusty parrot perched above the grand staircase, spoke of a place where tradition meets modern comfort.
Wildlife, Western Wear + Cowboy Spirits
On our first day, we were eager to explore the wild beauty beyond the lodge’s doors. Before the sun had fully risen, we set off on a drive through Grand Teton National Park, guided by the expert advice of Rusty Parrot employee (and passionate orienteer) Diego. The crisp morning air was thick with anticipation as we spotted a herd of elk moving through the frost-covered valley, closely observed by a lone coyote. Big-horned sheep perched on the slopes spilled out onto the road, momentarily blocking our way. And the sight of two moose dusted in snow, their breath rising like smoke as they chomped on their sage breakfasts, was a scene straight from a nature documentary.

Back at the Rusty Parrot Lodge, we were ready for a proper mountain breakfast, and Wild Sage delivered. Over plates of “The Everything” breakfast and a cinnamon roll for the table, we refueled while swapping stories about our dawn drive with fellow travelers. With warm Snake River Roasting Co. coffee in hand, we set out to explore Jackson’s vibrant shopping scene.
At Womenfolk, a treasure trove of vintage Western finds, I scored a classic Ralph Lauren cardigan with fringe detailing I’m still swooning over. At Beaver Creek Hats & Leather, we were fitted for bespoke hats—essential attire for an authentic Jackson experience. A stop at Gold Mountain Gallery, where David Yarrow’s work was on display, perfectly captured the region’s wild spirit.

After posing for a few pictures beneath the antler arches in the center of town, we stepped into the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, where saddles double as barstools and the neon glow casts a golden hue over the leather booths and lively crowd. With a locally brewed beer in hand, we tipped our hats and toasted to a perfect first day.
Steep Days + Fireside Nights

The following morning, we grabbed a perfectly crafted latte from Persephone before heading on a 40-minute drive to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Taking the famous Big Red tram up to 10,450 feet to a top-of-the-world waffle breakfast at Corbet’s Cabin warranted the purchase of a souvenir t-shirt.

After the adrenaline rush of skiing Jackson Hole’s steep terrain all day, we slid into the Mangy Moose Restaurant & Saloon for a well-earned après. The atmosphere at The Mangy Moose was as lively as the spicy margaritas were strong! Live music, fresh snow falling and the brief appearance of a mother and baby moose wandering out from the woods made it extra special.

Dinner at Corsa, nestled at the base of the ski resort in Caldera House, was the perfect capstone to our day. We sat under the orange glow of the bar, watching the chefs at work and enjoying shrimp toast, arancini and a bottle of Barolo that warmed us from the inside out.

When we returned to the Rusty Parrot Lodge, we poured ourselves some cider (available all day in the library) and sank into the outdoor hot tub to soak our tired legs. On a snowy night, with the outdoor firepit ablaze, it feels like the mountains are truly wrapped around you. Jackson Hole delivered an unforgettable mix of adventure, Western hospitality and wild beauty. And the Rusty Parrot Lodge? It was the perfect home base for it all.
