On Sunday morning, a new champion was crowned at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. 2020 Olympic silver medallist Abdi Nageeye became the first Dutch runner to win the men’s title in New York City, crossing the line in 2:07:39.
This win marks redemption for Nageeye, who had to drop out of the Paris Olympic marathon 12 weeks ago after taking a fall. Nageeye played his cards perfectly in NYC, staying on the heels of 2022 NYC champion Evans Chebet into Central Park before outkicking the Kenyan in the final 800 metres. He is the first European marathoner to win the race in 28 years.

“The Olympics was my biggest disappointment ever,” Nageeye told Canadian Running in a post-race interview. “I knew in two months, I could do something great. I put in 110 per cent every day and pushed myself in ways I haven’t before.”
Chebet held on for second, finishing just six seconds behind Nageeye in 2:07:45. Kenya’s Albert Korir, the 2021 champion, placed third in 2:08:00. Tamirat Tola, the course record holder and Olympic champion, was fourth in 2:08:12.
Canada’s Linkletter finishes 15th
Canada’s sole entrant in the professional field, Rory Linkletter, led the race for a few kilometres in the early stages. He dropped off the lead pack when Chebet made a move coming off the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan around the 26-kilometre mark. Linkletter made up some time in the final 15 kilometres, ultimately finishing 15th in 2:11:42.
“I wanted to prove to myself that I belonged and could run a hard marathon course,” said Linkletter. “I feel I did that.”

Linkletter’s time of 2:11:42 is the third-fastest marathon of his career and the fastest by a Canadian man on the NYC course, surpassing Peter Maher’s 2:11:55 from 1991, where he placed fourth.
Linkletter, who ran the Olympic marathon in Paris 11 weeks ago, described the NYC course as a rollercoaster. “One mile I felt I was flying, the next felt hard,” he said. “The wheels were gone at 32 km, but I tried to close as many gaps as I could.”
Top five men:

Six-time Champ Marcel Hug dethroned in wheelchair race
In the men’s wheelchair division, American Daniel Romanchuk dethroned six-time champion Marcel Hug, finishing in 1:36:31 for his third NYC Marathon victory. Hug, who won the race for the last three years, clipped the wheel of Great Britain’s David Weir around the 34-kilometre mark and struggled to recover, ultimately finishing fourth and heading to the medical tent post-race.
The race also saw the first-ever American sweep of the wheelchair division, with Susannah Scaroni taking the women’s wheelchair race.
