Aman Kyoto: A Tranquil Haven in Nature’s Embrace

Visual Hotel Review of Aman Kyoto

By Contributor and Photographer Maja Laxdal

Nestled amidst the enchanting forests of Kyoto, Aman Kyoto stands as a testament to the seamless integration of modern luxury and traditional Japanese aesthetics. My recent stay at this exquisite resort left me captivated by its attention to detail and overwhelming feeling of serenity.

Aman Kyoto’s secluded location provides a haven of tranquility, surrounded by the lush beauty of nature. The resort’s commitment to preserving the natural environment creates an atmosphere that immediately transports guests away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Aman Kyoto, designed by the brilliant late Kerry Hill, is an architectural brilliance. The resort embraces the philosophy of “wabi-sabi,” celebrating the beauty found in simplicity and imperfection. The design reflects a deep respect for the traditional Japanese aesthetic, incorporating elements such as sliding doors, tatami mat flooring, and a minimalist design ethos.

Walking through the carefully crafted spaces, one can’t help but appreciate the thoughtfulness put into every detail. The minimalist design of the guest pavilions and rooms perfectly balances modern luxury with the timeless elegance of Japanese architecture. Each room offers a sense of peace and harmony, creating a space where guests can unwind and connect with nature.

Aman Kyoto is renowned for offering an exceptional dining experience, combining traditional Japanese flavors with a touch of modern innovation. There are two dining areas in the resort, the main dining venue, The Living Pavilion and Taka-An, helmed by Executive Chef Shinichiro Takagi. The Living Pavilion, often serves as the heart of the resort’s culinary experience, is designed to offer a serene and elegant atmosphere, reflecting the natural beauty of Kyoto. Guests can expect a menu that emphasises locally sourced, seasonal ingredients prepared with precision and creativity. Dishes showcase the finest elements of Japanese cuisine while incorporating global influences. Taka-An offers a traditional and authentic kaiseki dining experience. Kaiseki is a multi-course meal that reflects the seasonality of ingredients and the skill of the chef. The restaurant provides an intimate and immersive setting, allowing guests to experience the essence of Kyoto’s culinary heritage. This was a dining experience to remember (and I highly suggest opting for the wine pairing as well!).

My favourite thing about the Aman brand is the rich, cultural experiences they curate for every destination. Aman Kyoto is no exception and the experiences on offer are second to none. Whether participating in a traditional tea ceremony, trying one’s hand at ikebana or making wagashi, guests have the opportunity to connect with the region’s heritage in a meaningful way. There are also guided nature walks, hikes, yoga or cycling tours allowing guests to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Aman Kyoto’s dedication to privacy and exclusivity ensures an intimate and personalised stay. The limited number of rooms and discreet service contribute to an atmosphere where guests can fully appreciate the beauty of their surroundings without intrusion.

Aman Kyoto is a haven for those seeking a harmonious blend of luxury, nature, and cultural immersion. The resort’s commitment to preserving the essence of Kyoto while providing a world-class experience make it a standout property for discerning travelers. My stay was nothing short of enchanting, leaving me with cherished memories that will linger long after I’ve departed from this serene retreat.
