“From California to the New York island, From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters, This land is made for you and me”
Few songs encapsulate the scale, diversity and variety of America quite like the Woody Guthrie song, “This Land is Made for You and Me”. The USA is a stunning land with so much to explore here as you, in the words of Woodie, “go walking that freedom highway.” Travelling the length and breadth of the third largest country in the world by land mass can carry some challenges though, especially if you’re limited in time or budget. Joining an America backpacking tour can be a fun, efficient and cost-effective way to maximise your time here. Here are six reasons why we think you should consider it!
Groups Are More Green
Keeping our carbon emissions low is a major consideration when we build any Coyote Trip. Shared minibuses used by our groups compared with solo travellers hiring cars is a much greener way to travel and when not in minibuses, we use public transport wherever possible. We also include experiences where you can give back to the local communities you visit, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen in LA. This coupled with our mantra of working with local small businesses in the communities we travel to, means joining our America backpacking tour allows you to travel in a green and sustainable way.
Price
Depending on how you travel, America can be very affordable or extremely expensive. It is not the place to be booking things last minute or just “travelling where the wind blows you”. If you do you may find yourself in a city like Boston having to splash out hundreds of dollars on last minute accommodation where all affordable options have been booked up months before. Likewise, having some insider knowledge to know the most affordable way to get from A to B can avoid some very costly journeys.
Few of us are organised or knowledgeable enough to be making detailed travel plans months in advance, but booking an America backpacking tour is an easy way to ensure your travel will all be arranged according to the most cost efficient routes and all booked well in advance. Its a surefire way to avoid any expensive hiccups on the road.
People
The Coyote Trip team are an adventurous bunch and we all have a yearning for travel. We spend a lot of time walking that freedom highway, both travelling independently when devising new routes to take Coyote Trippers on and also in groups when we’re leading or joining our group tours.
Our team gets to experience first hand just how much more memorable a shared experience can be. Within the first few days of a tour, our groups have already spent more time together than many busy young professionals can spend with their friends back home in a whole year and our groups quickly become bonded through the shared experiences like hiking to the Hollywood Sign or rising with the sun for a surf class in Santa Cruz.
Safety
The land of the free is also the land of guns, gangs, high levels of homicides and 25% of the worlds prisoners. There is no need to be scared or put off travelling here, but there is a need to be sensible and plan your travel whilst taking safety into account. Travelling in a group tour brings safety in numbers and an experienced guide can ensure you are not venturing into dangerous areas and remind you how and where to keep vigilant.
Tricky Routes
America is the land of the automobile and has notoriously under funded public transportation options. There are some routes where there are simple no public transport options available, so if travelling independently you either need to pay for extremely expensive private transfers or hire your own car… not ideal. For example, it’s very difficult for a solo traveller to get from Santa Cruz to Yosemite, even though they are close to each other and both beautiful areas for a backpacker to explore. A group tour means private minibus transfers are affordable and convenient, allowing you to spend more time exploring these quaint, quieter areas.
Characters and Experiences
On our group tours you will come across countless friendly guides and experience providers who are passionate about showing you the best side of their country. We believe having a local concert promoter show you around Vegas or an experienced woodsman lead you through the New England forests allows you to explore these lands in a more memorable way than travelling solo.
At the Coyote Trip, we feel that travel can be a powerful tool for creating understanding, integration and respect between people from different parts of the World. Whether you choose to travel solo or decide group tours are more your thing, you’ll never regret your choice to head out and explore. If you do choose the group option then we hope you’ll consider The Coyote Trip!
