Amtrak is one of the best ways to see the vast country, and the company is putting its USA Rail Pass on sale this month to help travelers do that on a budget.
The rail company is currently selling the multi-ride pass for $299 — or $200 less than the regular price of $499, Amtrak shared with Travel + Leisure. With the pass, travelers can book 10 coach rides for less than $30 per segment across most of Amtrak’s network with no blackout dates.
To take advantage, travelers must purchase the pass by Jan. 17, travel within 120 days of the purchase, and be fully used within 30 days of their first ride. Members of Amtrak’s Guest Rewards program can earn two points per dollar spent on each USA Rail Pass after their first segment.
“With big savings on the USA Rail Pass, we’re proud to offer guests the opportunity to create lasting memories traveling by rail across the nation,” Eliot Hamlisch, Amtrak’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Whether booking a bucket list excursion, nationwide journey, or series of smaller trips, the USA Rail Pass provides a better way to reach an incredible breadth of winter and spring destinations while avoiding the stress of flying or driving.”
Once travelers score the USA Rail Pass, it’s available to use on some of Amtrak’s most popular routes, including the Adirondack line, the Silver Service line, the Texas Eagle line, the California Zephyr, and more. However, the pass is not available to use on Acela trains, the Auto Train, the Maple Leaf line in Canada, or on the Thruway Bus Series 7000-7999.
Beyond the USA Rail Pass, Amtrak offers two other similar multi-ride passes: a commuter multi-ride option, and a California Rail Pass, which costs $159 and allows travelers to hop on and off several California trains on any seven days over a 21-day period.
