On Thursday, Athletics Canada announced a team of 27 athletes who will race at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Nassau, Bahamas on May 4 and 5. The team, comprising Olympic medallists, world championship gold medallists and up-and-coming talent, will compete for spots at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The Canadians will race in each of the five disciplines that make up the program at the World Relays: men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, plus the mixed 4x400m.
With a star-studded line-up of Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney, among others, the full men’s 4×100 team will seek redemption after struggling in the heats in 2023 (on the same night that De Grasse ran the 200m final). The team earned silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and gold at the 2022 world championships in Eugene.
This will be Canada’s first trip to World Athletics Relays since the 2019 event in Yokohama, Japan. The Canadian mixed 4×400 metre team of Austin Cole, Aiyanna Stiverne, Zoe Sherar and Philip Osei took silver that year.
In a press release by Athletics Canada, Sherar said, “the main goal is to qualify both the women’s 4×400 and mixed 4×400 for Paris. That is first and foremost.” Shehar helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. She added, “I think getting on the podium would also be a goal. It is very early in the season, but our group has shown that we are ready to run fast now, and with a couple more races, I think we will be set up well to run some fast times.”
