BABYMONSTER’s debut ‘Sheesh’ faces criticism for resemblance to BP songs

YG’s ascending new girl group BABYMONSTER received various reactions from their fans and spectators after the release of their latest single “Sheesh” on April 1, 2024 from their first ever mini-album called “BABYMONS7ER.” According to some Koreans, “Sheesh” sounded very much like BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” and “Shut Down.”

Even before the girls’ official debut, global music fans had already dubbed them as “BLACKPINK’s younger sisters.” But then, numerous critics have pointed out that they just follow the typical YG template.

A K-pop fan also posted a song review on “Sheesh,” mentioning particular elements that have always been present in typical YG songs, which are also reflected in the music video. These include the first verse attempting to establish the atmosphere of the scene, the pre-choruses showcasing percussion, the chorus singing the title itself and [the group’s name], the rap for the second verse, and the bridge’s tempo shifts, as well as the “rum pum pums.”

Yet contrary to the belief that BABYMONSTER’s single was like a rejected and cheaper BLACKPINK song, it still garnered support and positive remarks.

While other fans dwelled on the fact that these rising K-pop idols are exquisite and talented, some decided to consider looking into YG’s patterns when selling their company’s concepts and production instead of putting in the work of producing ideas that capture the group’s identity.

As of April 1, the music video has already amassed more than 18,500,000 views in just 18 hours, and it continues to increase by the minute. Positive feedback still proliferates in YouTube’s comment section as fans praise BABYMONSTER’s talent, vocals, and dance moves.

Despite the negative encounters, many await for BABYMONSTER to show more of what they have as their fans hope that their latest single will help their career rocket up and as the song says “put ‘em to the sky high high high high.”
