This Blue Margarita recipe is perfect for summer parties, poolside lounging, or any occasion when you’re in the mood for something a little exotic and visually striking. The balance of sweet, sour, and salty flavors, combined with the intriguing blue hue, makes for a memorable drink experience. Cheers!
In Minnesota, this is called the Minnesota Margarita or Lake Side Margarita if you will. My family loves to go to Zorbas during the Summer lake weekends and get the Minnesota Margarita, which is pretty much a blue margarita with Curaçao. We love it cause it comes with a bobber and fresh hazelnuts for a garnish. It’s also very nice and refreshing.

Why are Blue Margaritas so Great?
It’s blue!Their vibrant blue color, this striking hue adds an exotic twist to the classic margarita, transforming it into a visually appealing drink that’s perfect for festive occasions, summer parties,or simply to brighten up a regular day.
Blue margaritas maintain the beloved balance of flavors found in traditional margaritas— the sweet and sour notes from the lime juice and the complexity of the tequila—while introducing a subtle orange essence from the blue curaçao.
Blue margaritas are great because they are versatile and customizable. Whether you prefer them on the rocks, blended with ice for a slushy texture,or served up without ice, there’s a blue margarita to suit every preference. Additionally, they can be easily adapted to suit various tastes by adjusting the sweetness or the strength of the alcohol, making them a perfect choice for a wide range of occasions and palates.
Ingredients Needed
- Tequila (preferably silver for a cleaner taste)
- Blue Curaçao –used for that captivating blue color and subtle orange flavor)
- Fresh Lime Juice(about 2 limes, depending on size and juiciness
- Simple Syrupadjust according to your preferred sweetness, can also use a limemade mix
Extra Ingredients
- Ice (for shaking and serving)
- Salt for the rim (optional but recommended for that classic Margarita flair)
- Lime wedges or rounds, for garnish
- Optional:A small splash of orange liqueur for added depth (adjust blue curaçao accordingly)
How to Make Blue Margaritas
- Prepare Your Glass:Start by preparing your serving glasses. If you enjoy a salted rim,run a lime wedge around the edge of each glass and then dip the rims into a plate of salt. You can do this step with just half the rim if you prefer. Fill the glasses with ice and set aside.
- Mix Your Cocktail:In a cocktail shaker, add a generous amount of ice,the tequila, blue curaçao,fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. If you’ve opted for the additional orange liqueur, add it now. Secure the lid on your shaker and give it a vigorous shake, chilling and combining the ingredients thoroughly, usually for about 15 seconds.
Tips for a Blue Margarita
- Serve:Strain the mixture into your prepared glasses, being careful not to disturb the salted rims. The cocktail should have a vibrant blue color, with a frothy top from the shaking.
- Garnish and Enjoy:Add a lime wedge on the rim or float a thin lime round on the surface of the cocktail for an extra touch of elegance. Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing, tropical twist on the classic Margarita.
- If you want to make this more of a family size cocktail beverage I’d suggest using thawed frozen limeade instead of squeezing a ton of limes.
- For a Minnesota Margarita at Zorbaz they like to garnish the margaritas with a tiny bobber and some hazelnuts.
- This recipe can easily double or tripled for a larger group of 6 people.
