Hearing the phrase “functional performance” sounds like “drinkable beer” to me. A bike should be functional right? The third generation BMC Roadmachine looks to bridge the gap of performance and functionally. While offing a staggering amount of models and builds for every budget or ride ahead.
The Roadmachine line seems new, but it launched nearly twelve years ago (someones old). Where did the Roadmachine come from? The idea was a “grandfondo bike” aimed for endurance events and offered a pleasurable ride. This bike had to look the part of its road brethren too. A bike for riders that want to spend a few hours in the saddle but look as good as the fastest out there.
This is the BMC Roadmachine.
What’s New – BMC Roadmachine
Its not far from the launch of the 2nd generation (previous model) of the Roadmachine, but lots of small changes make this 3rd generation model pretty special. The improvements are very functional, such as component compatibility and letting the frame be the building block for a what ever ride you’re taking; road, off-road or e-assisted.
The frame gets what we call the “2024 special”; a compliance update, and internal frame storage. But some other unique advancements include a integrated rear light, and a D-fender for usage when not in “race mode”.
Future Proof
BMC dubbed this version “future-proof”. Hows that? By optimizing it with road-smoothing 32 mm tires. BMC (like many others) believe the tires are only gonna get wider from here, and 32mm is right in the sweet spot (it seems especially for Roubaix this year). But thats not that widest this new frame can accommodate. If you’re looking to get slightly wider (remember this is a endurance road bike) it will take up to 40mm.
Endurance Engineering
The Roadmachine frameset feels like a BMC. Its looks slimlar to the 2nd generation, but more refined and sleek. It includes TCC (Tuned Compliance Concept), and BMC endurance technology.
The endurance technology gives the Roadmachine a good amount of vertical compliance. The design includes a D-shape seatpost, and ICS (Integrated Cockpit System) and stem for clean lines.
Back to the Impec Lap
BMC’s lmpec Lab is home to its in-house R&D, prototyping, and testing facilities. It’s the ground floor for performance. For the newest iteration of the Roadmachine, the team was give a lofty goal; “To define the future of endurance riding.” Easy right?
A key piece of this goal was to find a way to fit bigger tires onto a road bike frame without impacting the bike’s overall wheelbase. This is a common challenge, and bike manufactures have navigated it with both brute or beauty. BMC would be on the latter.
BMC Roadmachine Geometry
For the frame tweaks. The team repositioned the bottom bracket to create a more compliant seat tube and seat post structure. They chose to add no more than 5 mm to the rear center, resulting in a fairly negligible 1-3 mm extra on the overall wheelbase of the bike (frame size dependent).
The team also increased the stack height to give more options to those with less lofty aero goals. The change still allowing for flexible fit adjustment with minimal spacers. The design team chose to droppe the bottom bracket by 5mm, and kept the same head tube angle. This small change keeps the original trail number, bringing the BMC “endurance formula” back into alignment.
The Roadmachine is available in sizes; 47, 51, 54, 56, 58, and 61cm frames.
Models: BMC Roadmachine
The 2024 Roadmachine lineup offers a bike for all riders: the premium Roadmachine 01, the all-rider-focused Roadmachine, and the gravel-ready Roadmachine 01 X and Roadmachine X.
Expanding the lineup even further, the TQ-powered 01 AMP and 01 AMP X join the Mahle-motor-powered AMP, giving riders the ability go further and faster with e-assistance.
