Brooks running is holding tight to their spot as one of the most popular running shoe brands thanks to the Ghost and Adrenaline. Both of which will be getting an update again in 2025. Why wouldn’t you encourage your long time fans to buy the latest and greatest?!Brooks Ghost 17 previewHaving reviewed a lot of past Brooks Ghost models, we know that the line doesn’t usually make any massive changes. And yet, somehow, we remain excited for the next shoe each year.

Here’s what we know so far thanks to our time at The Running Event (TRE) in Austin.

What’s New and Different in the Brooks Ghost 17

All right, so what’s changing?

Well the big news is that for the first time the Ghost is now a 10mm heel to toe drop, instead of 12mm.

At RTTF we LOVE this change and think it will serve a lot of runners really well. That slightly lower drop could help reduce some knee or IT Band issues that we see frequently in newer runners. This may simply be because a higher drop pushes your knee forward and changes your alignment.

While they are keeping the same DNA Loft cushioning, the addition of 3mm to the forefoot and 1 mm to the heel is going to make the shoe feel a little softer and they say have more pop.

It should NOT feel like the Ghost Max or the softer Glycerin. It’s still going to be a shoe that you can use at a variety of paces.

The increase in stack height is actually why they changed the heel drop. It’s allowing for more stability in the shoe and ensures that you aren’t sinking to the ground as they keep adding cushion.

The final change?

Brooks is going with a more modern design and updating the look of some shoes. Do runners care? Well the increase of On Running shoes says they just might, but in our polls they mostly want bold colors and great fit.

They certainly aren’t become a leisure style brand based on our previews…but ok maybe a little more modern. Maybe.

Who is This For?

If you liked the Brooks Ghost 16, then we imagine this is going to be right up your alley. It’s not changing the foam used and no massive increases in the stack.

  • Wide Feet: We love that they make this available in wide options
  • Heavier Runners: Great choice for getting some cushion in a way that’s stable, though we have found some more max cushion options (like the Glycerin Max) are great if doing longer distances.
  • Long Runs: A shoe that thousands have used for long runs for years, it’s a winner
  • Front of the Pack: Only as an easy run shoe, this is not a tempo or speed shoe.

All right, that’s your sneak peak of the Brooks Ghost 17 coming in 2025. A small drop in height and yet still it’s a big change for a shoe that’s beloved.

What do you think?

Are you excited? How do you feel about what Brooks has been doing with shoes the last few years?
