Runners with little ones two and under, this one’s for you. On Tuesday, Run Calgary announced the inaugural “Wee Wild Ones Diaper Dash” to join the Calgary Marathon race weekend festivities on May 25.
The 42.2-foot dash will serve as “a joyful family experience to engage our future marathoners in their first ever competitive event,” says Run Calgary executive director, Kirsten Fleming. Designed for participants under the age of two, the Diaper Dash will feature a toddler- and baby-friendly course lined with neon pylons to help little ones stay on course and allow family and friends to get involved in the fun.
While this event is the perfect opportunity for fun family photos, don’t let the cuteness fool you–it’s still a competition! Crawling and walking are allowed and the fastest baby will be crowned the top Diaper Dasher and walk away with a prize package worth $200.
There are also some “regulations” to be aware of:
- Parents can employ various tactics to motivate their little ones, including toys, cameras, stuffies and snacks.
- In the spirit of fairness, race directors will diligently verify birth certificates if needed to ensure that none of the participants exceed the allowable age limits.
- Athletes are encouraged to wear diapers and also clothes appropriate for a spirited competition.
The event is capped at 60 participants, registration is $10 and you can sign up here. For racers with older children looking for more family-friendly opportunities, check out the Kids Marathon as well.
