Canadian Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer retires from running

Tokyo 2020 Olympian and the fourth-fastest Canadian marathoner, Trevor Hofbauer, has hung up his carbon-plated shoes. On Wednesday, the 32-year-old announced on social media that he has accomplished everything he wanted to in his career and will be moving on from athletics.

On Instagram, Hofbauer wrote: “Today, I am announcing my retirement from Athletics. My career has been a dream come true, heavily supported by family, friends, community, race organizations, sponsors, and the desire to be the best version of myself in this field. I am forever grateful for the memories and friendships that have developed along the way, and for the opportunities to represent my home, community and country on the world stage.”

“Thank you to everyone who has cheered me on along the way.”

Hofbauer is a three-time Canadian marathon champion and represented Canada at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the men’s marathon, where he placed 47th overall, in 2:19:57. His personal best time in the marathon came at the 2019 Toronto Waterfront Marathon, where he finished as the top Canadian, in 2:09:51.

The 32-year-old had the goal of making the Canadian marathon team for Paris 2024, but his Olympic aspirations ended after he suffered an Achilles injury last spring.

Despite his elite days being over, Hofbauer says he will continue working within the running industry with RunCalgary and the Calgary Marathon and as a retail specialist with independent running store, Strides Running.

Hofbauer had an unlikely path to professional running, coming up through the Canadian collegiate system after pursuing a career in basketball until he was 19.

In a 2015 interview with Canadian Running, Hofbauer said he wanted to be a positive role model within the running community. “Being a part of the community gives me a different perspective on the sport; it allows me to remain level-headed, and I’m able to meet so many people with amazing stories. This sport is a gift; that’s how I perceive it. At the end of the day, I want to be known as the kid with a ton of heart before I’m labelled as the kid with fast legs.”
