Caramelized Onion Dip with Greek Yogurt


French Onion Dip is the perfect dip for any holiday celebration or game day appetizer. Great for dipping any kind of chip, cracker, or bread in.

I have to admit this isn’t the prettiest dip to photograph. It’s basically white from the greek yogurt and brown from the onions, but I tell you what. It tastes AMAZING. For years, I’d buy the container of French Onion Dip at the stores from Cass Clay Creamery and polish it off in a day or two. It took me this long to make it myself and I’m pretty sure that the onions weren’t even caramelized. They were probably the dry onion flakes you’d get in the spice aisle at the grocery store. Gross!

This caramelized onion dip is a breeze to make at home and once you make it you will want to make it over and over again. There’s nothing better than the smell of onions cooking on stovetop.

How to: Caramelized Onions

The term caramelized onions just mean that the onions were cooked low and slow on the stovetop anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes. I’ve seen recipes where they say it takes 45 minutes to make caramelized onions but that simply isn’t the case. My onions were done in less than 20 minutes. Once you’ve mastered the process of making caramelized onions it’s so easy. The trick is to use low heat when cooking them. If you put the onions on high or medium heat right away they burn quickly. They are so good in french onion soup or on top some burgers. 

My version of caramelized onion dip is WW friendly and makes about 2 cups of dip  (¼ cup of dip is 1 smart point). See tips below for making this dip zero smart points per serving. Every ingredient in this recipe is zero points minus the olive oil. I love to use potato chips (the wavy kind) or Corn Good Thins for dipping.

Ingredients for Caramelized Onion Dip

  • (I like to add the recipe in the middle for those that hate scrolling)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups chopped yellow onions (from about 2-3 onions)
  • 1 cup nonfat plain Greek Yogurt
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ⅛ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chopped garlic

How to Make Caramelized Onion Dip

Step 1: Heat olive oil in a large, thick-bottomed deep pot (I used a 5-quart Dutch oven) on medium-low heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until translucent and starting to color about 10 minutes.

Recipe Tip: If at any point during the cooking of the onions they start to dry out, add a tablespoon of water to the pot. Add salt and pepper to taste. Lower the heat and cook gently, uncovered, for about 10 minutes longer, stirring occasionally, until the onions are nicely caramelized. Then set aside. Let cool a bit before adding to the other ingredients.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, mix together the mayo and Greek Yogurt (a rubber spatula works well for this). Stir in the caramelized onions. Sprinkle with garlic salt and stir to incorporate. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce.

Chill until ready to serve. Serve with potato chips.

Tips for Caramelized Onion Dip 

Sliced Onions – Start with sliced onions and olive oil in a sauté pan on medium-low heat. You want a big pan so the onions have room to do their thing. And make sure you have plenty of sliced onions. They’re going to shrink down significantly when caramelized. You can definitely use a mandoline here to help get evenly sliced onions or a knife works too.

Add Salt – Season the onions with some salt. This will draw out the moisture. As they cook, they’ll first get soft, then juicy. Then, this concentrates and they begin to brown, or caramelize, making them sweet and delicious. It will take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Stir and Shake – Stir the onions occasionally and enjoy the process. Give the pan a shake every once in a while. You can add in a little bit of water at a time to help the onions cook instead of water.

To use Olive Oil or not: If you are oil-free and don’t want to use it for this recipe you can simply just cook the onions in water until they are soft. A lot of people think fat just adds on more points but here it adds more flavor to the onions.

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups chopped yellow onions (from about 23 onions)
  • 1 cup nonfat plain Greek Yogurt
  • ¼ cup fat-free mayonnaise
  • ⅛ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
