Chocolate Chip Cookies with Sea Salt

I grew up making chocolate chip cookies with my sisters. We loved to eat them fresh and warm out of the oven. We used the Nestle Tollhouse recipe and were happy as clams with the results. But now we are grown up and our cookie game has improved. These Chocolate Chip Cookies with Sea Salt are much better than the version we made in our childhood. I hope you love them as much as we do!

Chocolate Chip Cookies with Sea Salt:

Oh my gosh these are some chunky cookies! So darn good. This recipe is pretty straight forward: flour, baking soda, and sea salt mixed with eggs, sugar, vanilla paste (or extract) and of course, chocolate chips. For this recipe, I LOVE dark chocolate. Dark chocolate and sea salt are magic together. But if you like the sweeter milk chocolate chips, far be it from me to change your mind. You can even do a combo of the two so you have some bitter some sweet!

The Sea Salt:

These cookies are amazing as is, but it’s that flaky sea salt that gives you that salty “bite” that puts them over the top! I love Maldon’s Flaked Sea Salt (I actually  buy the huge tub to save money)

Do Your Cookies Go Flat? Here’s Some Tips and Troubleshooting!

One of the most frustrating things that can happen when baking is your cookies going flat during baking! If this happens to you, I have some tips so it won’t happen again!

  1. Make sure your butter isn’t too soft. It should be left out before baking so it comes to room temperature, but if you leave it out too long, or your house is hot your butter will become too soft and flatten out when baking. You can easily remedy this by popping the dough into the refrigerator for 30 minutes before baking.
  2. Check the expiration dates of your baking soda or baking powder. Expired soda may not make the cookies stay fluffy.
  3. Use parchment paper on your cooking sheet or use  a non stick baking sheet instead of greasing your cookie sheet.
  4. Make sure your cookie sheet gets completely cool between batches. I usually rinse mine in cold water or use two sheets allowing the one to cool while the next batch bakes.

Servings: 20 cookies

  • 3
    cups
all purpose flour or bread flour
  • 1
    teaspoon
    baking soda
  • 1/2
    teaspoon
sea salt or kosher salt (plus more for sprinkling cookies)
  • 3/4
    cup
    brown sugar
  • 3/4
    cup
    granulated sugar
  • 1
    cup
    butter, room temp
  • 2
    large eggs
  • 1
    teaspoon
    vanilla paste or extract
  • 1
    bag
dark or milk chocolate chips (I use Guittard 60% cocao)

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and place oven rack in center position. Place parchment paper on cooking sheet, set aside.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and salt.

  3. Use a mixer to blend together brown sugar, granulated sugar, and butter. When smooth, add eggs one at a time, add vanilla, mix well.

  4. Add flour mixture a bit at a time and mix until well incorporated. Fold in chocolate chips by hand.

  5. Use an ice cream scoop to spoon cookie dough onto cooking sheet. These are fairly big cookies, make sure you leave enough room between cookies. I usually bake three rows of three per batch. Sprinkle the top each cookie with sea salt.
