Try our Mango Pico De Gallo or Strawberry Corn Salsa too. And our NO FAIL Homemade Salsa which is a breeze to make! These are some of the simple ways to brighten up any meal.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Citrus segments. Use a combination of citruses for the ultimate refreshing experience. Also it’s a great way to balance the sweet and tangy flavors. We used grapefruit, blood orange, cara cara, clementines and lemon.
- Citrus Juice. To make a saucy salsa, we used a little bit of juice from the variety of citruses, plus we added lime juice.
- Jalapeno. While this is optional, but the slight spicy kick with the sweet oranges is phenomenal.
- Onions. Red onions are our favorite, and we finely dice them so they don’t overpower the taste.
- Cilantro. It’s the classic flavor for any salsa, but if you can’t handle it, feel free to use parsley.
- Seasoning. The simple salt and pepper is all we used here. Even though we’ve had it with chilli powder and a pinch of cumin, we prefer to keep it simple.
How to Make Citrus Salsa
Ok seriously, once you have picked your citrus selection and segmented them, you’re good to go. For the record, if you can’t segment the citrus, make sure you peel it off well. Peel off the pith, the white part and the skin. At that point you can dice the citrus.
- Add all the citrus, juices, lime juice, salt, jalapenos, onions and cilantro in a bowl.
- Mix them well using a spoon and taste for seasoning.
- Add more salt if needed.
- And there you have it!
Citrus Salsa Tips
- Pick your favorite blend of citrus. Make it as colorful and versatile as you can. The more contrast of sweet, tangy and citrusy, the better.
- It’s optimal to segment the fruit. You’ll need a sharp knife for perfect citrus segments.
- To perfectly segment any citrus, peel off the skin and white pith entirely until you see flesh. Use a sharp paring knife and go around the segments avoiding the pith. The citrus segment will fall off and that’s what you’re looking for.
- If you’d like a shortcut, peel the skin and pith until you see citrus flesh. Then slice into rounds and dice roughly into chunks.
- You can use a different blend of citruses every time and it will be different but still delicious.
- If you’d like a smoky tasting citrus salsa recipe, add in a pinch of cumin and 1/4 teaspoon of chilli powder.
- Depending on what you’re serving this with, you can make it sweeter by adding honey. Or spicier by adding chilli flakes.
How to Store Citrus Salsa
The salsa can be stored for 2 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. You’ll notice the citrus will wilt slightly but still taste amazing! We love freshening it up with a clementine and tossing the salsa around. If you feel the salsa has too much water, you can pour some of it off.
Variations on Citrus Salsa
You can add one mango here and blend it between a citrus salsa recipe and Mango Pico De Gallo. Likewise you can add half a pineapple.
Our favorite way to add more omega-3 here is to add an avocado make this a cross between salsa and Black Bean and Corn Salad.
