Climbing the Eiffel Tower Is About to Get More Expensive

Ticket prices to climb the Eiffel Tower are going up next month.

Starting June 17, it will cost more to climb the iconic tower whether travelers go by elevator or by stairs, French network BFMTV reported. Going forward, an adult ticket with elevator access to the viewpoint at the top, for example, will cost €35.30 ($38.40), up from the current price of €29.40 ($31.98).

Ticket prices will also increase for children as well as for other types of access. An adult elevator ticket to reach the second floor, for example, will increase from €18.80 ($20.45) to €22.60 ($24.58), according to BFMTV. And a stair access ticket will increase from €11.80 ($12.84) to €14.20 ($15.45).

Tickets for children under 4 years old will remain free.

It was not immediately clear when tickets would go on sale at the new rates, but notably the tower said tickets for visits from June 17 would “go on sale later than usual.”

The price increase is being blamed on a lack of visitors from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to BFMTV.

The Eiffel Tower, which dominates the Parisian skyline, welcomes nearly 7 million visitors each year, according to the monument, and around 75 percent of them are foreigners. But in 2020, BFMTV reported the tower only received 1.5 million visitors. And while visitor numbers have since rebounded, the tower lost €113 million ($1.23 million) from 2020 to 2022.

The increased prices also come as Paris is preparing to host the Summer Olympics. The Eiffel Tower will remain open during the Olympic Games, but will close for the opening ceremony on July 26. That’s because the opening ceremony will take place along the iconic Seine (complete with each delegation in boats for the parade of athletes), and is expected to conclude at Trocadéro, just across the river from the Eiffel Tower, according to the official site for the Paris Games.
